Valley shuts down

Srinagar, July 4: The valley observed a complete shutdown on the maiden visit of the Narendra Modi as Prime Minister. Authorities had clamped curfew in several parts of the valley, however, despite unprecedented security arrangements protests were held in several parts. Reports of protesters clashing with the police kept flowing in from several parts of the valley.
A group of youth took to streets at Chota Bazar in Kani Kadal area of the city and shouted slogans and also burnt tires on the road. There were reports of protests after Friday prayers outside main mosque from neighbouring Balgarden locality as well. In volatile Maisuma, a peaceful protest against the PM's visit was held.
In uptown areas of Barzulla and Kralpora, peaceful protests were held by people. Meanwhile, a complete shutdown was observed in all the districts of north Kashmir including Baramulla, Kupwara and Bandipora while protests and clashes also broke out at many places.
In Sopore town of Baramulla district, a protest rally was carried out from Jamia Masjid soon after Friday prayers in which hundreds of people participated, witnesses said. At Khanpora Bridge in Baramulla town, youth clashed with forces, witnesses said. However, later they dispersed.
Clashes were reported from volatile Palhallan hamlet of the Baramullah district after Friday prayers. The youth and forces clashed at Gulshan Chowk in Bandipora district, sources said.
Like north and central Kashmir, a complete shutdown was also observed in south Kashmir areas. Sources said that shutdown was observed in Kulgam, Pulwama, Shopian and Anantnag districts with protests at few places. Reports said protests were held in Anantnag and Pulwama townships after Friday prayers.
The Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the state to inaugurate Katra railway line in Jammu, chair high level security meet in Srinagar's Badami Bagh Cantonment and inaugurate 240 Megawatt NHPC hydro-power project in Uri area of Baramulla district. It was Modi's maiden visit to state as Prime Minister of India.
