Let Divisional commander liquidated

KUPWARA, July 9: A top LeT divisional commander was killed in an encounter at Handwara area in North Kashmir's Kupwara district on Wednesday afternoon.
Official Sources said acting on specific intelligence about the presence of 4-5 militants at Shah Mohalla of Hamla Pati village in Zachaldara area of Handwara Tehsil, the joint team of army's 21 Rashtriya Rifles, 92 Bn Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Special Operation Group (SOG) cordoned off the whole area.
As such the joint team intensified the searches, the militants hiding in the area tried to break the cordoned and opened heavy fire upon the forces, sources said, adding that the fire was retaliated ensuing a fierce gun battle.
He said that one militant has been killed during the gunfight and the exchange of fire is still going on in the area.
"He was involved in the killing of police head constable at Hangalpora area of vilgam on july 13, beside he was also involved in the attack on army convoy at Drugmulla on November 16 last year, who was operating in Handwara, Rajwara and Ramhall belt since 2012.
"GPS-1, phone-1, AK-47 -1 along with two magazines, Hand Grenades-2 and a pouch was recovered from his possession"official said.
Superintendent of Police Handwara, Maqsudul Zaman, told Early Times that Handwara Police, Special Operation Group (SOG) and Army launched a joint operation in Hamlapati area of Rajwara in North Kashmir's Kupwara district this afternoon. The SP said that operation was launched this afternoon when Handwara police received information about presence of a group of 4-5 LeT militants in the village. He said that village was cordoned off and militants opened fire on security forces leading to a fierce gun battle.
"One militant of (Lashkar-e-Toiba) Let outfit Abu Mussa died in the encounter while 1 security personnel were injured", the SP said.
Meanwhile, Srinagar-based defence spokesperson said Acting on specific information regarding the presence of militants in village Hamlapati, police and army launched a joint operation this afternoon. "Militants fired upon the joint search party that was retaliated triggering an encounter in which top Lashkar-e- Toiba militant was gunned down and the search operation is still going on encounter is going on" he said.
Meanwhile search operation is still going on till last reports came in.
