Early Times Report
NEW DELHI, July 9: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in a last and final effort to retain an alliance with the Congress is camping in New Delhi. The CM had held meeting with the UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi. But, on finding no positive and firm commitment by the Congress president, is shoring up all the resources to convince the president.
Omar Abdullah had been making attempts to retain the alliance. According to sources, he is trying to convince the Congress president that to have a pre-poll alliance is in the interests of both the parties. Sources said Omar is also floating a political balloon in the New Delhi that since PDP and BJP have reached an understanding it's imperative that these two 'secular' parties should also do so ahead of the elections.
"Omar is floating every possible theory to stitch pre-poll alliance. He is trying to take advantage of the weakened Congress. However, till now he has not succeeded as Congress high command is political too mature to buy his bait," said a senior leader, wishing not to be named.
The Congress is banking on its assessment that the party still has chance to emerge as a single largest party despite the recent setback in the Parliamentary elections. It's internal assessment is based on its assumptions and some ground reports also that people of Jammu can swing back to the Congress in the Assembly elections. It's for this reason that party is raking up the issue of regional council for the Jammu region .
"The party at this stage can't afford to show even signs of closing ties with Omar Abdullah who had in the last about 6-yr not care either about the Jammu region or for the concerns of the Congress. Omar had threatened and blackmailed the Congress state unit. But this time, he is unlikely to have his way. The party can't commit political suicide by sailing on sinking NC ship," said a senior Congress leader.'
