| KU's EMMRC degenerates into den of mediocrity | | | Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, July 9: Senior faculty members of Kashmir University are pained at the manner in which the Educational Multimedia Research Centre (EMMRC) is functioning, bringing both shame and disrepute to the university.
Several sections in the KU faculty are distressed the EMMRC is actually a joke in the name of media freedom. Faculty members say it is a sad state of affairs that EMMRC has degenerated into a den of mediocrity, meanness, deceit and corruption.
Sources reveal that the genesis of the mess at EMMRC lies in the fact that some of the people in major positions at the institute are inadequately qualified, and got jobs by hook or crook.
In the last few years, these people have been in a race to seek promotions, which are not forthcoming on account of their poor qualification. Hence they are continuing with their vicious ways to seek promotions in one way or the other.
One of the major demands of this poorly-qualified group working at the centre is for a local vice-chancellor. The reason is simple. A local vice-chancellor can easily be browbeaten by these media peddlers, while a highly qualified Vice Chancellor with global experience will not bow to their demands.
In their demand for a local vice-chancellor, a group of persons working at the EMMRC are busy writing articles in local news-papers and urging their media friends to write about the importance of having a local vice chancellor. Incidentally, it was Prof Abdul Wahid, a local vice chancellor, who gave a plum position to one of the persons working at the Centre, which further fuelled their expectations.
The nefarious functioning of this power group working at the Centre is so blatant that after the selection committee meeting, a dinner was organized in full public view at the lawns of Kashmir University for experts, ignoring the issue of minimum secrecy so essential for selection committees.
Old timers of the university point out that professional dishonesty at EMMRC is so alarming, that the centre has become a byword for how an Educational Multimedia Research Centre should not function. During the day, these people are on the payroll of Kashmir University as government employees. By virtue of this, they are members of different committees on KU, and have access to inside information.
In a case of blatant professional misconduct, in the evening these same people work for different news papers and draw additional salary. It is a matter of concern that no university authority has questioned these persons on why they share the inside matters of the university with the media, and act as commercial agents.
In various quarters of the university, these very same people are blamed for leaving no stone unturned to assassinate the character of former vice chancellor Prof Jalees Khan Tareen. Old timers of the university point out that this group mobilized the leading local newspapers against Prof Tareen and finally ensured his exit from the university.
Almost all university employees have deep regrets for Prof Tareen's removal, for he served the university to the best of his ability like a missionary. The malicious group working at EMMRC arranged photographs of Prof Tareen with girl students of the university in different departments and fudged and disfigured them in a manner that Prof Tareen was shown in poor light. They did not stop there. They took a group of lady teachers (whose names figure in Prof Tareen,s book) to some political leaders and forced them to say unpleasant things about Prof Tareen.
Insiders point out that this very same group is now nicknamed in the university campus as 'bandwallas'. They are invited for the media coverage of all seminars, because everybody wants to avoid their ire. Inviting them to lunches and dinners is also common. Their professionalism is of such a high order that a very senior functionary of EMMRC was many times seen cleaning the overcoat of a former vice chancellor. When it was an occasion for taking group photographs, this very same person was seen on many occasions acting as court barber for many vice chancellors.
It is an open secret at the university that this foul power group at EMMRC has always been agents of rouges and thugs in the University of Kashmir. They have always been part of conspiracies against outside vice chancellors. They have been known to act as brokers to settle deals with people on the campus to earn diverse benefits.
As if these charges were not enough, EMMRC has been known to be a den of corruption too. A member of EMMRC was removed from a senior position on corruption charges. He had got five of his relatives appointed in EMMERC against payment seats. Of these five employees, two were exchanged with another rouge to avoid being noticed. |
