| Low key affair 'Eid celebrations in flood ravaged 'Srinagar' | | | Bashir Assad
Srinagar, Oct 6: Though Muslims all over the world are celebrating Eid-ul- Azha with great enthusiasm and traditional religious fervor, but the people in flood ravaged Srinagar have little reason to enjoy the day even the ever busy Lal Chowk present a dismal look on auspicious Eid. As the devastating floods hit the capital city and wreaked unimaginable havoc, the enthusiasm of celebrating Eid virtually is missing in Srinagar this year. Once the capital town Srinagar started to witness swarm shoppers even many days ahead of the auspicious occasion but this year it was very rare thing to see. If recalled just two months ago people would flood the commercial hub of Lal Chowk ahead of Eid for shopping but the devastating floods have destroyed everything there and but is visible it is the muck and the foul smell emanating from it. The shopkeepers are seen busy in clearing the muck and heap the damaged stocks were seen on roadside. Vey less people were seen even on Sunday Market which used to see a huge rush of buyers and if a Sunday falls ahead of Eid the things were completely different as the markets get over crowded. "We are left with nothing to sell and people have no money to buy whatever little available" lamented Ghulam Muhammad, a vendor at Sunday market near Polo View. However, Anantnag town in South Kashmir was wearing a festive look and people in thousands were busy doing Eid shopping. Though the Anantnag was first hit by the floods, however, the intensity was not so horrifying as it is in Srinagar town. People here have suffered damages here also but not so extensively as compared to those in Srinagar city. And it was the reason why the markets in this south kashmir town were flooded with the people and witnessed huge traffic snarls at many areas. Reports reaching here from Kulgam, Shopian, Pulwama said that shopping was average but in Tral town it was comparatively high. Similarly in North the markets witnessed rush and people were seen busy in doing Eid shopping. |
