| Pockets of summer capital witness clashes after Eid prayers, Yasin Malik arrested | | Flood affected traders hold protests, authorities enforce restrictions | | Jehangir Rashid
SRINAGAR, Oct 6: Amid restrictions on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha protests broke out in certain parts of summer capital leading to injuries to some persons. Scores of smoke shells were lobbed on the protesters to keep them at bay on the festive occasion of Eid. Clashes that broke out between protesting youth and security forces led to disruption of the Eid celebrations that turned out to be austere and sombre following the recent flood in the state. Dozens of vehicles were also damaged in the clashes thus causing huge loss to the owners of these vehicles. Early in the morning protests broke out in the volatile Maisuma and the adjoining areas after the news spread in the area that Jammu & Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) Chairman, Mohammad Yasin Malik has been arrested by police. The protesters resorted to heavy stone pelting on the police and Central Reserve Police Force personnel (CRPF) personnel. The security forces and police personnel lobbed smoke shells on the protesters and there was complete chaos in the area. The ding dong battle between the two sides carried on for some hours and the situation turned normal in the area only in the afternoon. Pertinently, Malik was arrested by police when a contingent of cops swooped on his residence at Maisuma at dawn. He was arrested to thwart his call for Lal Chowk Chalo for the flood affected traders of Lal Chowk and adjoining areas. Malik had asked the traders to converge at the city centre and offer the Eid prayers near the Ghanta Ghar. In the meantime, as soon as the Eid prayers culminated at Eidgah and people were about to listen to the Eid sermon protests broke out some distance away from the venue of the prayers. The protesting youth pelted stones on the police and CRPF personnel at this place as well. Some of the reports suggested that trouble started in the area after police lobbed a smoke shell and that landed in the people who were offering the prayers. The trouble led to disruption among the devotees and majority of them could be seen running for their safety. The stone pelting incidents led to chaos and confusion among the people who were passing through the Eidgah and adjoining areas. The protests that started from the Eidgah area spread to adjoining areas like Seki Dafar, Safa Kadal, Ganderpora, Kawdara, Aali Masjid and Braripora. Police and CRPF personnel lobbed dozens of smoke shells on protesters and the situation remained volatile in the areas for the hours together. At the same time authorities enforced restrictions in some of the areas in city centre to thwart the programme of JKLF under which the traders were asked to assemble at Ghanta Ghar and offer the Eid prayers there. Spools of concertina wires were erected by police and CRPF personnel and people were not allowed to head towards Lal Chowk and adjoining areas. Meanwhile, a group of flood affected traders carried out protest demonstration against the alleged apathy of state government in rehabilitation of flood affected people. The traders said that despite passing of lot of time the state government has yet to come out with rehabilitation package for the traders who have suffered huge losses. |
