Fire on border fuss in UN Assembly
10/9/2014 10:02:01 PM
On one hand Pakistani troops have resorted to repeated ceasefire violations on the LOC and on the IB in Jammu and Kashmir during the last three months,in which so far seven civilians have been killed and over 40 injured,on the other Islamabad has missed hardly any opportunity for raking up the Kashmir issue in international fora, especially in the UN General Assembly. It was in August that Pakistan Prime Minister,Nawaz Sharif, had raked up the Kashmir issue during his address to the UN General Assembly and Narendra Modi, whose address followed Sharif's on the next day, ignored Pakistan Prime Minister's diatribe and instead wanted Pakistan to create an atmosphere which was conducive for resumption of bilateral talks. While the guns from Pakistan were yet to be silent Islamabad approached the United Nations Military Observers Group(UNMOG) with a report alleging that India had resorted to unprovoked ceasefire violations. The reality was different. Pakistan reported to the UNMOG about the ceasefire violations when the Indian troops had launched a major offensive to silence the Pak guns. Why did not Pakistan report the matter about ceasefire violations during the last three to four months ? It was so because during that period Indian troops had not gone in for a furious and forceful retaliation.
Pakistan seems to play a dubious game.It wants to needle India and the Indian troops on the border and on the other internationalise the Kashmir issue. That is why for the first time in the last six months Pakistan reported the matter of border ceasefire violation to the UNMOG. It was done to interna-tionalise the Kashmir issue and to convince the world that it was not the Pakistani troops or Rangers by the Indian forces which had resorted to ceasefire violations.Well India did not fall in the trap and it stood by its stand and opted for silencing the Pak guns by heavy retaliatory fire.India did not report the matter to the UNMOG because UNMOG stands derecognized by India and in July last New Delhi had asked the UNMOG officials to vacate its headquarters set up in a palatial house adjacent to the Supreme Court of India. But Pakistan tried to rake up the ceasefire violations issue alongwith the Kashmir issue yet again at the UN, Pakistan dragged the UN Military Observer Group (UNMOGIP) into the current situation along the Line of Control where cross-border shelling has flared up.UNMOGIP must be enabled to play its role in monitoring the ceasefire Pakistan tells the UN General Assembly.
Ignoring the toll of Indian civilians from Pakistani shelling, Pakistan's representative has told the UN General Assembly about the killing of four innocent lives in Indian firing on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha. Surprisingly Pakistan has suggested to India to ceasefire so that talks could be resumed and peace was restored on the border.Did Pakistan respond the Modi's suggestion when he told the UN General Assembly that he was ready to resume talks provided Pakistan create a favourable atmosphere for the parleys ?Pakistan did not respond and instead triggered conflict on the LOC and on the IB so that it could push groups of militants into Jammu and Kashmir. The current round to cross-border firings that began in August resumed after an almost one fortnight lull. It has been described by Indian officials as the worst cease-fire violations since 2003. And one can measure the extent of the damage caused to the Indian border villages by the number of villagers having shifted or having fled to safer places. The total number of border villagers having fled to safer places on this side of the 187-km long International Border in Jammu has touched over 15,000. If more people flee to safer places it may revive the painful saga of 1999 when several thousand families had to migrate to safer places to lead a life of refugees for about four years.
