| In 2008 NC too had demanded postponement of polls due to Amarnath land row | | Despite NC opposition Assembly elections likely to be held in time | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Oct 9: Notwithstanding the stand taken by the ruling Jammu and Kashmir National Conference, Assembly elections are likely to be held in time because except NC no other party has suggested postponement of the Assembly polls, which are due in the month of December this year. Main opposition party PDP has yet not made its stand clear in the public but all other parties including Congress have given their consent to hold Assembly elections in time. Decision of Congress and BJP to give their consent for Assembly elections matter because both the parties are national parties and Election Commission of India would give importance to the view point of these two parties. Congress is part of the ruling coalition in J&K and BJP heading NDA Government at the Centre. Another national party BSP has also given its consent to hold Assembly elections in time. Jammu and Kashmir National Conference today sought deferment of elections to Legislative Assembly in view of large scale devastation caused by flash floods in most parts of the state . "Time is not ripe for holding elections as the atmosphere is not congenial due to devastation caused by floods and the trauma and shock the people are in", pleaded a three-member delegation of National Conference led by General Secretary Ali Mohammad Sagar and comprising of Provincial Presidents of Jammu and Kashmir Divisions, Devender Singh Rana and Nasir Aslam Wani in a meeting with Deputy Chief Election Commissioner Vinod Zutshi, currently on his visit to the State. It is not the first time that NC had opposed timely Assembly elections, in 2008 NC too had opposed Assembly election after Amarnath land row. Even that time Election Commission of India had not taken any serious note of the illogical stand taken by NC at that time to defer the Assembly elections. In the month of September 2008, a delegation of ECI had visited Jammu and Kashmir and even that time NC had disfavoured holding of Assembly polls at that time claiming that the situation in the state after widespread violence in the wake of the Amarnath issue was not conducive for the exercise. The ECI is eliciting the views of leaders of different parties separately. ECI sources said consultations would continue with other stakeholders like the Government and relevant agencies before taking a decision of holding elections in the state of J&K. |
