Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Dec 24: Amid harsh winter, the traffic remains at a standstill in most of the areas of city as a number of traffic signals that were installed with much fanfare have now have turned non-functional bringing immense inconvenience to the commuters.
The non-functional traffic signals at vital places are causing tailbacks in the city center creating chaos all across. Exasperated drivers on the roads have to spend hours to reach out to their destination while the traffic chaos is adding worries to the residents of the city.
"Every day I am stuck in traffic jams at Qamarwari and Jahangir Chowk, They have left us at the mercy of the situation. This is clear that all the facilities on roads are just for the VIP's and politicians, while the common masses are left to suffer," said Ghulam Nabi.
The faulty traffic signals are now providing a tough time to the police officials to streamline the traffic, who could be seen with the bamboo sticks- banging them on the vehicles for crossing the set lines.
Meanwhile several people who were stuck in traffic jam at Jahangir Chowk told Early Times that they have to spend hours in this traffic mess and their office schedule is getting perturbed every day.
"From several days, the non-functional traffic lights at Jahangir Chowk are not only congesting the area alone but sending the turbulent shocks to the adjacent areas which also continue to reel under the traffic mess. Since the days are very short, we get very late for our work.
The government should not sleep on this issue," said Mohammad Zaheer.
Surprisingly the scenes at various city center areas are quite lofty.
The commercial vehicles also are giving tough time to traffic police with the drivers parking their vehicles in the middle of the roads sans any remorse.
"Where will we stop, if not here? We are out to earn money to feed our family, we have to wait for the passengers and if the government is serious about the traffic mess, it should set permanent passenger stops so that no one violates the law," said Bilal Ahmad, a driver at Batmaloo.
Senior Superintendent of Traffic Police (SSP) Haseeb Ur Rehman while responding to the issue said the maintenance of traffic signals is carried out by Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC).
The SSP said SMC has been asked to perform the job of installing the traffic signals. He claimed that the problem would be solved within next two to three days.
