Srinagar, Dec 24: People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Patron, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed finds himself in a dilemma since his party did not get the expected number of seats in the Assembly elections that culminated with the counting of votes on Tuesday.
The 'under performance' of PDP mean that Mufti has to look for various options so that the government is formed in the state. Cozying up with Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) or Congress is the only option left for PDP to form the next government in the state. The decision would not be an easy one for the PDP and Mufti knows it very well.
Sources told Early Times that Mufti is not happy with the overall performance of his party since it fell well short of 44 seats needed for forming the next government in the state. Since some of the sitting legislators of PDP failed to retain their seats in 2014 assembly elections it has become more than difficult for the party to form the next government in state of its own.
"The party was expecting to win atleast 36 seats in the assembly elections but it fell short of the target set. Since the party managed to win 28 seats in the Assembly elections it has to look for 16 members so that the government is formed in the state. Alliance with the BJP seems to be only viable option available to the party," said sources.
Political analysts and observers believe that it would not be easy for PDP to team up with BJP for the formation of next government in the state. They said that ideologies of both these parties are poles apart and it would be difficult to reach a common ground.
BJP has always been quite critical of diluting the provisions of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in Jammu & Kashmir. On the other side the PDP has time and again maintained that army and other paramilitary forces operating in the state would have to work under the police. The contradictory position on AFSPA may act as a stumbling block in the formulation of Common Minimum Programme for running the government in case both the parties strike a deal.
Abrogation of Article 370 or debate on its efficacy in the state has been a plank of BJP while as the PDP would neither like the abrogation nor any discussion on provisions of Article 370. The BJP might find itself in trouble if the new government headed by Mufti decides to release the political prisoners in Kashmir. The BJP has been demanding stern action against separatists and once their sympathizers are released then it is bound to create friction among the two parties if at all they enter into any arrangement for the government formation.
Development can be the only common meeting point between the two parties and it is quite possible that the tricky issues would not be touched by them. This would mean that both the parties would give up their stated position on certain issues. However, it could prove to be detrimental for both of them in future.
