'BJP may offer Union Ministry to Omar' | | | Sumit Sharma Early Times Report Jammu, Dec 24: Bharatiya Janta Party may offer Union Ministry to the outgoing Chief Minister and National Conference leader Omar Abdullah if both the parties strike a deal and join hands to form the new government in Jammu and Kashmir, sources told Early Times. They said the BJP is mulling to throw ball in NC's court and modalities are being finalized to rope in the NC working president Omar Abdullah, whose party bagged 15 seats in the assembly elections, results of which were declared on Tuesday. "Omar Abdullah would be inducted in the Narendra Modi cabinet after getting him elected from Rajya Sabha," sources added. The BJP insiders said that Omar would be offered the Union Ministry to ensure that Chief Minister's post rests with the party for all the six years. When contacted the BJP spokesperson Arun Gupta, said: "The parliamentary board meeting headed by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi is in progress in Delhi for the formation of the new government in Jammu and Kashmir." The BJP president Amit Shah on Tuesday had said: "All options are open. We have the option of forming the government, supporting someone and being part of a government led by someone. All three options are open. The BJP will see what initiative the other parties take and decide accordingly." Pertinently, in the 87-member Assembly, the BJP came second securing 25 seats, three short of front runner People's Democratic Party (PDP). The BJP managed to improve its performance from 2008 polls where it had got 11 seats. Interestingly, the party had largest vote share this time with 23.4 per cent while PDP secured 22 per cent votes, indicating that BJP also got votes in Muslim-dominated Kashmir region but failed to open its account there and did well only in Jammu region by bagging 25 out of 37 seats. During erstwhile BJP-led NDA regime the NC was part of the union government and Omar was a junior minister in Atal Bhari Vajpayee's cabinet.
