Kashmir voted against non-performers | | | Bashir Assad Early Times Report JAMMU, Dec 24: The People’s Democratic Party is yet to come to the terms with the kind of verdict which, it feels, is totally beyond their comprehension. Though the party has emerged as the single largest party with 28 seats followed by BJP with 25 in the 87-member House, it is yet to come to the terms with the fractured mandate given by the people of Kashmir. "There is more to introspect than to cheer the half victory," a senior PDP leader said. He said the verdict was totally unexpected. "We were under the impression that there is a strong undercurrent against the ruling combine," he said and added that in Jammu BJP swept the polls while riding on Modi wave, the valley gave a completely fractured mandate and the party was yet to come to the terms. PDP was expecting not less than 35 seats, the PDP leader said. He said the vote was actually against the non-performance of the ruling alliance and the non-performing incumbent legislators of PDP. "Congress lost all three seats (Dooru, Kokernag and Uri) held by it but won 4 new seats with gain of one seat," said the leader. He said anti-incumbency was perhaps the only consideration before the electorate. NC lost in its stronghold (Srinagar) but gained in South Kashmir. "NC lost the lone Noorabad seat held by it since 2008 in South Kashmir but won two (Pahalgam and Homeshalibugh, thereby gaining one. PDP lost four of its seats and registered its win on three seats earlier held by NC and Congress. By and large, this thing was repeated in other districts including Srinagar, Ganderbal and Budgam in Central Kashmir and Kupwara, Baramulla, Bandipora in North Kashmir. Anti-incumbency against the sitting MLAs in North and Central Kashmir was quite evident as PDP won the seats held by NC and others. In Ganderbal, NC won against PDP because the former has fielded a new face from the constituency while replacing chief minister Omar Abdullah. "Omar Sahib was sure to loose. That is why he had chosen to contest from Ganderbal," said a political analyst. "A R Rather lost to PDP's Ghulam Nabi Lone from Chrar-e- Sharief while Dr Shafi Ahmad Wani faced defeat from Beerwah at the hand of Omar Abdullah. The political analyst said that PDP president Mehbooba was sure to lose if she would have contested from Wachi. "It was a negative vote in Kashmir while in Jammu there was a strong Modi wave," said the analyst. He said that the graphics clearly show that there was no wave in Kashmir valley and that it was only a negative vote. However, political observers also highlight that PDP won a few seats either by luck or because of anti-BJP phobia. "PDP won the Tral and Pulwama seats in South Kashmir by riding on anti-BJP sentiment," said an observer. He said that the incumbents, Mushtaq Ahmad Shah and Mohammad Khalil Bandh were lucky enough to register win in 2014 elections. They were actually the first among the non-performers but anti-BJP sentiment worked for them. Meanwhile, PDP insiders maintain that Mufti Mohammad Sayeed was dismayed over poor show of sitting MLAs in South Kashmir. The PDP's sitting MLAs who lost the polls include Bandipora MLA Nizzam-ud-din Bhat, Abdul Gaffar Sofi of Homeshali Bugh, Peerzada Mansoor from Shangus, Dr Shafi Ahmad Wani from Beerwah, Devsar's Sartaj Madani and Rafi Ahmad Mir from South Kashmir's Pahalgam. Had the sitting legislators witnessed their victory during the 2014 polls, there would have been 36 MLAs of PDP. According to sources, PDP may have delivered its best performance so far in the Assembly polls but the party received a major setback in its own bastion- south Kashmir. Four of the party bigwigs had to face defeat in different segments of South Kashmir. While Sartaj Madni and Peerzada Mansoor Hussain were defeated by Congress candidates, two others, Rafi Ahmad Mir and Abdul Gafar Sofi lost to NC candidates. Madni who had won from Devsar assembly segment for two running terms lost to Mohammad Amin Bhat of Congress while Sofi, the two-time MLA from Shalibug assembly segment faced defeat from Abdul Majeed Bhat of NC. Rafi Ahmad Mir who had won by a margin of 12000 votes in last Assembly polls was defeated by NC's Altaf Ahmad Wani this time. Peerzada Mansoor who had emerged victorious from Shangas assembly segment by a thin margin of 900 votes had to face defeat at the hands of Gulzar Ahmad Wani of Congress this time. Altaf Ahmad Wani of NC, the winning candidate from Pahalgam assembly segment, said that the anti-incumbency against sitting MLA helped him. "There was deep anti-incumbency against PDP MLA over his poor performance. I was hopeful of my victory," Wani told reporters. Winning candidate from Shangas, Gulzar Ahmad Wani also viewed the resentment against PDP's Mansoor Hussain as the factor for his win. |
