Amid PDP's silence, BJP may stake claim to form Govt in JK | NC-BJP alliance on cards? | | Jitendra Singh tipped to be new Chief Minister Fazal Khan Early Times Report Srinagar, Dec 24: A day after results of the recently held Assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir were declared, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) which emerged as a single largest party with 28 seats remained tightlipped about its future course of action but maintained that formation of the next dispensation would take time. However, Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) which emerged as second largest party with 25 seats seems all set to stake the claim for government formation in the state. Sources told Early Times that BJP has roped in six more MLAs, including Pawan Kumar Gupta from Udhampur, Sajad Gani Lone and his associate, PDF chairman Hakim Yasin and two other independent candidates and its tally stands at 31 at present. A top BJP leader while talking to this newspaper revealed that BJP leadership is in touch with the National Conference patron Dr Farooq Abdullah and modalities are being finalized. "If our talks with NC (which won 15 seats) materialize we will sail through," he added. Sources said that BJP and National Conference top leaders have not made their intentions public and are trying to reach on the consensus. "If BJP-NC deal works out Dr Jitendra Singh would be the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir at least for the first three years and for next three years the Chief Minister could be from National Conference," sources added. They said that BJP is insisting that there should be no rotational Chief Minister and the top post should rest with the party for the entire term. "Talks are on with Dr Farooq over the issue of rotational Chief Minister," sources added. The BJP insiders said the outgoing Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has already left for London and he would hold the deliberations with his ailing father Dr Farooq Abdullah, who underwent a kidney transplant operation in London recently. Sources said a top BJP leader is expected to arrive in Jammu tomorrow to discuss the all possible options and state BJP leaders after apprising him about the development may approach the Governor N N Vohra to stake the claim to form the next government in the state. A senior leader while commenting upon NC offering support to PDP said, "NC has offered support to PDP officially to clear its way for entering into an alliance with BJP. PDP has not responded to NC's offer and if it fails to do so, NC can later claim that it had no choice but to join hands with BJP to ensure that Governor rule is not imposed in the state." Sources said that PDP is divided over the issue of joining hands with BJP as a few people in the party believe that it would hamper the interests of the party. "We don't mind sitting in the opposition for a few more years. Even if NC-BJP join hands to form the next dispensation in the state it won't last long as it would be an unholy alliance and would end in no time," said a PDP leader. Meanwhile, the PDP spokesperson Nayeema Mehjoor said that her party has several options available at present and it would like to discuss every option on merit. She said that from Congress to BJP, the main political parties are offering support to PDP as it has emerged as the single largest party in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. "Even NC has offered its support to PDP for making of the government. We would like to deliberate upon every single option that is available with us at present," Nayeema said. She maintained further that the formation of the new government would not be possible in the near future as the situation that has emerged after polls needs time so that final call could be taken. |
