India needs modernisation of electronic warfare equipment | | | That India really needs major upgradation in its weapon system and other gadgets required for improving its defence capabilities is evident from the growing preparations by China and Pakistan for modernizing their war machinery.Since both Beijing and Islamabad continue to adopt anti-India postures New Delhi has to initiate measures for building its war machinery which could help India in meeting any challenge from its two main neighbouring countries that are inimical to India's progress. And right from the day Narendra Modi was installed as Prime Minister he has been quite keen to modernize weapons, aircrafts submarines and missiles.Apart from his emphasis on "make in India" policy, under which he has decided to provide basic support to the country's scientists and engineers for developing fighter planes, missiles, other sophisticated weapons and submarines locally. In addition to this he has visited a number of developed nations including USA where he has secured technical know-how for Indian scientists and engineers which could help them in manufacturing sophisticated weapons, gadgets, missiles, fighter planes and submarines. The first major initiative taken by the Modi led Government has been its signal to upgradation of electronic warfare equipment. The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) of the Ministry of Defence has cleared the upgrade of electronic warfare equipment for the Army and allowed the issuance of fresh tender to buy four specialised survey ships for the Navy. It, however, withheld an important project of the Indian Air Force and did not take on the agenda another one In all, proposal worth Rs 4,444 crore were okayed by the council. The DAC, headed by Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, could not arrive at a decision on a joint bid by Tata Sons Ltd and Airbus to replace the Indian Air Force's vintage fleet of 56 Hawker Siddeley HS 748, a medium-sized turboprop airliner designed by British firm Avro in 1950s.The DAC does not want, rightly,to take any hast decision. Modi has been instrumental in finalizing various defence deals with Washington and Moscow. He has plans of inviting various foreign firms, engaged in the manufacture of sophisticated electronic warfare equipment besides helicopter and fighter planes,to set up their units in India which too could help the BJP led NDA Government to fulfill its commitment on laying emphasis on "make in India."Knowing that today's wars are not fought by men but by machines the Modi led Government is keen to increase production from the companies in India that are engaged in manufacturing various types of equipments needed for a country to safeguard its integrity and sovereignty. Yes,during the last about 30 years India has had to increase annual allocations for the defence sector because of the problems being created on the country's border by China and Pakistan. Political analysts are of the opinion that if India has the liberty of reducing annual allocations for the defence sector the same amount could be utilized on the development, health and education sectors. But in view of the hostile stance being adopted by China and Pakistan India can ill afford to reduce the quantum of annual allocations for the defence sector. Infact there is need for increasing the defence budget every year. |
