Ideological differences delay Govt formation in JK | | | Kunal Shrivatsa
Early Times Report
JAMMU, Dec 27: With suspense over government formation continuing for the fourth consecutive day after the announcement of results on December 23, all the three major players including the Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP), the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) and the National Conference (NC), either of whom could stitch a possible tie-up to get the seat of power in the state are in a 'Catch- 22 situation' as the bogey of their ideological differences has become a deterrent in finalizing a pact. If sources within the BJP are to be believed then the key to formation of new government lies squarely with the PDP and the NC who were not ready to buy the BJP idea of Hindu as a Chief Minister (CM), adding that despite the stiff resistance by Kashmiri leadership hectic parleys for cobbling up a post poll alliance are going on with both the parties particularly with the PDP. They further said that the BJP is exploring all possibilities to cobble up an alliance to form the government and to realize its dream of installing a Hindu as CM. But so far the things have not moved beyond a certain point as a section in the PDP and the NC is not at all amused with BJP pushing for a Hindu CM from Jammu province due to which the deal, at least, with the PDP has stuck till now, said sources. "Though a channel of communication has been opened up with the PDP as well as the NC but the reluctance of some of the leaders of PDP and NC to accept a Hindu CM from Jammu region has turned out to be a stumbling block in shaping up a possible alliance," said sources "A few of the PDP and NC leaders are not willing to accept BJP's plan of giving the post of CM to a Hindu from Jammu…They are opposing it tooth and nail… The opposition to a BJP's idea of having Hindu CM is being raised to keep people of Kashmir in good humour, who are vote bank of both the PDP and the NC…. The resistance to BJP's Hindu CM arrangement is nothing but their political compulsion," sources added. Sources further said that the stiff posturing of PDP and NC on the prospects of a Hindu CM has put the BJP in a dilemma as it would be hard for the party to pull out itself after going so far where a possibility of a BJP's Hindu CM candidate from Jammu could become a reality. "Any agreement between either the PDP and the NC to form the next government with one of these parties' support could not be reached yet since the BJP is persisting with its agenda of anointing a Hindu CM for the first time in the history of J&K," said sources. "The Kashmir based political parties' unwillingness to accept a Hindu CM has not gone down well among Jammuites who in a hush-hush voice have started to say that in case the BJP leadership bowed before the wishes of Kashmir based political parties then the people of Jammu would be left with no other choice but to press for a separate statehood for Jammu… Anything less than a Hindu CM would be treated as betrayal with the people of Jammu," they added. |
