SRINAGAR, Dec 27: Despite the tall claims of state government that it is committed to providing adequate heating arrangements in health institutions across Kashmir the situation is different on ground with both the patients and their attendants shivering due to intense cold conditions in the valley.
It has come to the general observation that hospitals of the valley, from PHC to district hospitals, have become trouble spots for the patients, more so for the patients because there are no heating arrangements for them. "It is a known fact that the cold season in Kashmir begins in November and the heating arrangements in hospitals should be put in place on priority. But as the Chillai Kalan (Dead of the winter) is in progress, the authorities have failed to come up with an answer to this problem. As a result of this the patients become disease prone instead of being cured," said Bashir Ahmad from Budgam.
Bashir alleged that state government has taken no measures to ensure sustained heating arrangements in the hospitals at least in those which are of the status of the district or sub- district hospitals.
He said that though the gen-sets are available in the hospitals throughout the valley but most of these gen-sets are out of order. These gen-sets are gathering dust either for want of the repairs or there is no budget for purchasing the fuel to run these gen-sets. "As for as the heating arrangements in the district hospitals or sub-district hospitals are concerned, the staff members enjoy it to the best of their satisfaction. But for patients it is desire only as they continue to shiver in the bitter cold," said Sajad a medico (name changed).
Sajad went on saying that government makes all possible arrangements for its employees but turns its blind eye towards poor patients who are left with no choice but to bear the brunt of the bitter cold. As per him, the hospitals look more like the cold storages because these hospitals remain in the tight grip of the cold in the absence of the heating arrangements.
People of the valley opine that the officials of the concerned department have no idea about the sufferings of the patients who are admitted in the hospitals despite the fact that there are no heating arrangements in the health institutions.
