PDP, BJP agree not to touch 'tricky' issues?

SRINAGAR, Dec 27: People's Democratic Party (PDP) and Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) have taken small but 'meaningful' steps for the formation of next government in the state. Both the parties have almost decided to give up their stand on issues that can block the alliance in Jammu and Kashmir.
Sources told Early Times that while PDP has been asked not to stress on the Self Rule, BJP has been told in categorical terms that their leaders should not rake up the issue of abrogation of Article 370 from the state. This has been done to ensure that the likely alliance runs for six years and there are no hiccups whatsoever.
"Some of the leaders of PDP and BJP have been talking to each other over the past few days with respect to the government formation in state. Both the parties have decided not to touch issues that could hamper the smooth functioning of the government. Consensus has almost reached the two parties and right now the talks are going on some other fronts," said sources.
Sources said that both PDP and BJP have agreed that PDP Patron, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed would be the chief minister of the state for the full term of six years. It has been learnt that BJP would get lion's share in the new cabinet. Most important portfolios are all set to be bagged by the BJP legislators.
"PDP wants the union government to make an announcement about withdrawal of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) from the peaceful areas of the state. This has come up as a stumbling block with regard to the finalization of the deal between the two parties. Once there is consensus on this tricky issue the smaller matters would fall in place automatically," said sources.
It would be in place to mention here that BJP General Secretary, Ram Madhav had carried out parleys with senior PDP leader and Member Parliament, Muzaffar Hussain Beigh here on Thursday evening and Friday morning. Both Madhav and Beigh deliberated over various possibilities of BJP- PDP alliance.
In the meantime, PDP President, Mehbooba Mufti has authorized chief spokesman of the party Naeem Akhtar to put forth the views of the party vis-a-vis government formation in the state. In a press release, Mehbooba said that no other leader of the party is authorized to issue statements with regard to the government formation or possible alliance in the state.
Pertinently the recent assembly elections have thrown up a hung house in the state with no party getting simple majority to form the next government. PDP has emerged as the single largest party with 28 members with BJP coming second with 25 legislators. National Conference has finished third with 15 members with Congress coming fourth with 12 legislators. Independents and others have won seven seats in the elections.
