Early Times Report

Nagrota, Dec 27: Bahujan Samaj Party candidate from Nagrota Rakesh Wazir, who contested the recent assembly elections unsuccessfully, today alleged that "money and muscle power" prevented him from winning the polls.
Without naming the National Conference candidate Devender Singh Rana, who won the polls from Nagrota, Wazir said: "The candidate spent crores merely to win election which was once upon a time considered to be a social work. The basic institution of democracy was totally mauled in Nagrota constituency."
" Candidates distributed money and wine to lure the voters and the people who offered resistance were humbled by using muscle power," Wazir alleged.
He said that despite victims lodging FIRs no action was taken against the accused who openly threatened people to ensure that they cast their vote in favour of a particular candidate.
"Goons of powerful candidates openly distributed Rs 5000/- to Rs. 10,000/- per household along with wine to ensure victory of their political bosses," Wazir alleged.
He claimed that BSP made more than 30 complaints two days before the polls as huge chunk of voters were forced to change their loyalties. "BSP being the party of the poor and down trodden was the worst sufferer and lost the elections," he added.
Wazir said that if each candidate has spent more than Rs 10 crore what social service he would do?
He alleged that some officers were brought to Nagrota to ensure the victory of a particular candidate (Devender Rana).
Wazir appealed the Election Commissioner of India to take cognizance of the matter otherwise the basic institution of democracy would be ruined and the purpose of holding the elections would be defeated.
He asked the party workers to equip themselves and keep this in mind that they have lost the elections, not fight and bounce back with full force with new strategy to tackle the menace of money and muscle power in the next elections.
