Early Times Report

BUDGAM, Jan 11: People of many villages of this Central Kashmir district are still dreaming about the banking facilities at their doorsteps despite the claims of the bank authorities that they are at the back of the commoners.
The authorities claim that the banks are at the disposal of the common people but as a matter of fact people still cherish it to turn into a reality. People in most of the villages face inconvenience on account of the poor banking facilities. Believe it or not, Jammu and Kashmir Bank has failed to come up with the ATM facilities for thousands of inhabitants in the Budgam district when the same has been provided to the remotest parts of the valley.
"Our area has suffered for want of the basic facilities and the lack of ATM facilities in our area has doubled the miseries for us.
The visits to the bank branches in our area has become a troublesome exercise for the people as they have to wait for hours together to withdraw the money," said Showkat Ahmad, a resident of Soibugh.
As per Showkat, it is an irony that thousands of residents of the area are without the ATM facilities. Even the people of Soibugh have to travel distances to use their ATM cards despite the fact that there are two bank branches, one each of SBI and of course of the J&K bank but when it comes to ATM services, these branches have let the people down.
The SBI is the decades old branch in the area but it has failed to change with the change in the times.
Though an ATM was installed in the area to give some respite to the customers but it remains out of order most of the times. It remains functional hardly for the four five days in a month giving heartburns to the people.
"Only yesterday I covered a distance of about five kilometres on foot to avail the services of the ATM of SBI installed at Soibugh but found it out of order for the reasons better known to the bank authorities.
Then I boarded a sumo and travelled a distance of eight more kilometres to withdraw a sum of money. It is totally disgusting," said another customer Mohammad Waseem.
Though Jammu and Kashmir bank opened its branch in the Soibugh area with an aim to bring the banking facilities at the doorsteps of the people but even after passing of more than two years, the bank hasn't succeeded in installing ATM there.
The absence of an ATM is giving tough times to the people of villages like Daharmunah, Wadwan, Gotapora, Warapora, Sangam, Pymus, Chat-tabugh, Farashgund, Galwanpora, Haran, and of course to the huge population of the Soibugh itself. An official of SBI told Early Times that power breakdown and disruption in internet facility are the basic reasons for lackadaisical performance of the bank in the area.
The official said that a micro-wave has been sanctioned adding that all the problems would be solved with the installation of the same.
On the other hand an official of Jammu & Kashmir Bank said that the ATM machine would be installed very soon in the Soibugh area.
