Propaganda against PDP led to Governor's rule | Anger in Jammu | | Rustam
Early Times Report
JAMMU, Jan 11: The imposition of Governor's Rule in the state has not gone down well, particularly with the people of Jammu province where they were hoping that they would have a real and effective say in the governance of the state for the first time since 1947. There is consensus among the enlightened sections of the society in Jammu that it was the rabid opposition in Kashmir to the idea of the BJP either leading the state government in alliance with the PDP or the NC or becoming the second most important constituent of the government headed by the PDP that compelled the PDP to dither, thus enabling the State Governor to bring the state under his own direct rule after the caretaker Chief Minister Omar Abdullah stepped down from the office on January 8 to create a constitutional crisis, as also to create difficulties for the PDP, which had clearly indicated its intention to do political business with the BJP subject to the condition that its pre-conditions were accepted by the BJP. It was not only the NC, the Congress, the CPI-M and two independent Kashmiri MLAs Er Rashid and Hakim Yaseen, who created complications for the PDP by offering their canny support to the reluctant PDP, saying the PDP must not keep any kind of truck with what they called the Hindu BJP, anti-Kashmir BJP, anti-Kashmiriyat BJP and anti-Muslim BJP, as the formation of the PDP-BJP or BJP-PDP coalition government would be against the interests of Kashmir. Separatists of almost all varieties such as Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Abdul Gani Bhat, Syed Salahuddin and Shabbir Ahmad Shah, Kashmiri intelligentsia, Kashmiri commentators, Kashmiri business community, Kashmiri civil society and who not in Kashmir worked overtime to ensure that the PDP didn't form government with the BJP, which won 25 seats in Jammu province and created a history of sorts. They created such a situation in the Valley through their no-holds-barred anti-BJP campaign that the PDP ultimately developed a cold feet, notwithstanding the fact that the discussions between the PDP and the BJP are still reportedly on. What created additional difficulties in the formation of the PDP-BJP or BJP-PDP coalition government in the state was a relentless campaign against such a coalition by certain Delhi-based opinion makers as well. They repeatedly urged the PDP leadership not to tie up with the BJP taking into consideration the Kashmiri aspirations. They asked the PDP to either form coalition government with the Congress or the NC and independent MLAs, as "they are secular". All this worked against the genuine interests of the people of Jammu province. And it was the desperate and out-on-the limb Omar Abdullah who played his last card that left the State Governor with no other option but to recommend his own rule in the state. The fact of the matter is that all the anti-Jammu and communal forces in the Valley joined hands to keep the BJP at bay. This is not good politics considering the nature of the State of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh. The move to keep the BJP out of power not only constitutes a negation of the 2014 historic mandate in the state but it is also an attempt that could create a volcanic situation in this part of the state - a situation similar to the one the nation witnessed in 2008. Jammu has become force to reckon with and it has to be recognized whatever one may think of it. Indeed, the developments which have unfolded in the Valley after December 23 have only angered the people of Jammu province and created a situation that could even lead to the disintegration of the state. |
