PDP-BJP resume talks on Govt formation in JK | Drabu meets Shah, Madhav in Delhi | | Bashir Assad
Early Times Report
Jammu, Jan 11: Two days after Governor's rule was imposed in Jammu and Kashmir, the major political parties Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) resumed informal talks on government formation in New Delhi on Sunday. Sources told Early Times the PDP leader Haseeb Drabu met the BJP President Amit Shah and the party General Secretary Ram Madhav this morning and held discussions over various issues. "The government formation in Jammu and Kashmir is likely to get delayed due to forthcoming elections in New Delhi and Bihar in February and March. However, the parties are trying hard to strike a deal which could be conveyed to the Jammu and Kashmir Governor, N N Vohra for obvious reasons," sources added. They said, "Even if government formation is deferred till the elections are held in Delhi, Governor should be apprised about the deal so that he can accordingly take administrative decisions." They said second round of fresh talks between PDP and BJP would be held on Monday. "PDP is not ready to give up on any of the five conditions put for an alliance with the right wing party. The five conditions put forward by PDP include, no negotiations on Article 370, dialogue to address the internal and external dimensions of the Kashmir issue, Revocation of AFSPA and Cross LoC trade," sources added. The recent Legislative Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir threw up a hung verdict in the state with Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) emerging as the largest party by securing 28 seats, followed by BJP with 25 seats. With no party winning the 44 seats needed to form a government in the 87-member state assembly, coalition rule is only possibility. So far no party has been able to cobble up numbers to stake a claim for government formation. For the first time since 1983, say analysts, J&K voted along religious and regional lines - the BJP swept the Hindu-majority Jammu region, while the "soft-separatist" PDP swept the Muslim-majority valley. "It is a disturbing verdict," says a senior Journalist. |
