Drug trafficking in J&K alarming, teenagers soft targets: PDP | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Jan 11: People's Democratic Party (PDP) leader Hamid Choudhary while expressing his grave concern over rising drug abuse in Jammu and Kashmir State has asked state administration especially police to launch a massive war on drug mafia for the reason that they are targeting teenagers and spoiling our next generation. The drug trafficking in the state has reached an alarming stage but there's nothing substantial that has been done by the government to end this menace. In his statement issued here, Choudhary Hamid said that assertions of Inspector General of Police, Abdul Gani Mir that state cannot afford to lose its next generation to drugs and that of Dean Academic Affairs of University of Kashmir Professor Muhammad Ashraf Wani that State police was "hand-in-glove" with drug mafia are alarming and establishes that the issue needs a quick action and not mere deliberations. Past records reveal that a number of children belonging to police personnel or associated with them in one or the other way besides wards of rich and influential have suffered a lot and even lost thei ugs will engulf us all, he asserted. Despite the fact that police had arrested many drug peddlers and seized tons of contraband yet the situation continues to be alarming. The inter-state drug mafia is still active and operating unabated. The Drug De-addiction Centres set up by police might also be helping many but many youth are still losing their lives to drugs. Choudhary Hamid said that IGP Abdul Gani Mir was also right in telling that eradicating drug abuse from the state has become the second most challenge after fighting militancy. He added that by all means the government should constitute special cells to deal with drug menace and increase vigil on highways, check posts, borders, inter-state borders, in hotels and restaurants and educational institutions which are main routes and soft targets. |
