Early Times Report

Jammu, Mar 6: Despite repeated reminders by Indian System of Medicines(ISM) department to incumbent government to sanction funds for equipments of drug testing laboratory but non- release of funds the department used laboratory building for providing medical consultations and other allied services (OPD).
Wishing anonymity, an official of ISM department told Early Times that nearby decade back the state government felt need to establish its own Ayurveda, Siddha and Unani(ASU) drug testing laboratory, the then Minister concern had taken the matter with concerned union ministry. The union government had sanctioned Rs.1.5 crore for establishment of laboratory in state.
"Only building infrastructure was completed in such funds, after that the department concerned had taken the matter with state as well as union government for purchasing equipments and creation posts for this Lab.
However a detail project report was submitted by department to government to release funds for it but none of them take seriously and the files are still gathering dust", sources said, adding that worth crores medicines of Ayurveda, Siddha and Unani purchased by state government to other states, if they want to test them they forwarded sample to state having laboratories.
Sources further said that the leaders of Bhartiya Janta Party always claimed that all developmental works of Jammu region was neglected by previous government, if their party are in power than all works would be done.
As almost three year completed, its own minister has failed to sanction funds despite repeated reminders.
It is pertinent to mention that Jammu and Kashmir has huge potential of medicinal plants but due to apathetic approach of government, the department still purchased crores of medicines out of state because of non-establishment of its own ASU drug testing & research laboratory.
If the laboratory was established in state no doubt it helps to generate employment as well as helps to generate state economy.
Repeated calls by this Jurno to Director ISM, he was not available for comments.
