Govt handling of Kathua murder case creating a communal divide
Kattal Brahamana, Samba meets of HEM
3/6/2018 11:29:22 PM
Early Times Report
Jammu, Mar 6: Situation in Kathua and Samba districts is deteriorating with each passing moment. The Hindu Ekta Manch (HEM), which has been spearheading movement for forcing the PDP-BJP Government to hand over the alleged Rassana rape and murder case to CBI, saying the "people of the area have no faith in the Crime Branch", has intensified its activities calculated to muster more and more public support. It is holding meetings with the people across Kathua district and all the meetings are very well attended.
The other day, the HEM held "impressive meetings" at Hiranagar's Kattal Brahamana and Samba to muster people's support and chalk out new strategy to make the "inflexible" J&K Government accept what it called its "genuine demand". Speaker after speaker at the Kattal Brahamana and Samba meetings attacked the government from right and left and threatened that the "people would take recourse to all available means to get their demand accepted". So much so, they threatened that they would organize bandh in each village and town of the Kathua and Samba district as the people are fed up with the highhandedness of the Crime Branch and the manner in which the police are picking up innocent people, including school-going children, to create fear psychosis among the minority community".
Things have reached to a stage that the HEM leadership and other prominent civil society members have threatened to enforce a "social boycott" against members of another community, saying "their presence in the area has threatened the demographic balance" and that "they are indulging in activities which could destroy the future of their children". The separatist leadership in Kashmir and elements in some mainstream Kashmir-based political parties have taken cognizance of this threat and publicly denounced the threatened "social boycott".
"We may organize a rally of 10 lakh people in next few days in case the government continued to ignore our demand seeking CBI probe in the Rassana case. The people of whole Kathua district are with us. The people of Samba, Ghagwal and other towns of Samba district are with us. All want a CBI probe and all want the HEM to hold a rally of lakhs to force the authorities to abandon the ongoing probe by the Crime Branch and hand over the whole case to CBI. We are thankful to the people of Kathua who three days observed a complete shut down; we are thankful to the legal fraternity of Kathua, which suspended work to express solidarity with us and the cause we are espousing," said senior leader of the HEM amidst slogans "Aap Age Bado, Hum aap Ke Saath Hein".
One thing was common in both the meetings: All the speakers, without any exception, were very critical of the BJP and the Congress. "They are letting down us; but we will teach them a lesson at an appropriate time," the angry speakers would say. They would also say that "they are not fighting for jobs, road or water; their struggle is the struggle for survival".
This is the situation in the Kathua district. The authorities would do well to read the writing on the wall and act before it is too late. They have to defuse the situation and they can do so by handing over the case of alleged rape and murder of a minor Bakerwal girl.
