Early Times Report
srinagar, Mar 6: The functioning of Directorate of Social Welfare Department, Kashmir has virtually come to a grinding halt as its Director has not come to the office for the last over a week.
Zoona Begum registered her name with the Social Welfare Department last year, seeking widow pension from the government but still waits for clearance of her case.
"I have registered my name with the Social Welfare Department for pension case since I have no source of income, but officials told me that they could not clear my case," she said. "For the last one week, I am coming to meet the Director, but he is not present here," she said, while waiting outside the Director's office.
There are hundreds of such people who want to meet the Director to get their work done, but to no avail. "Nobody is listening to our pleas. There is no accountability as Director is not available here," Abdul Rehman, a resident of Bemina said.
On Tuesday, when this correspondent visited the office of Director Social Welfare Department, Kashmir it presented a deserted picture.
"Sahab Jammu main hain woh kuch din ke baad ayeenge (the officer is in Jammu, he will meet you after few days)," said an official. Last week too, the same official told this correspondent that Director was in Jammu and will come after few days.
The insiders alleged that for last one week the director had not come to the office.
"There are scores of files of urgent and important nature gathering dust in the Director's office. Files awaiting decision on important administrative and policy matters are lying on his table. Without the Director, official work is piling up and one fails to understand when these files will be disposed off," said one of the employees wished not to be named.
Common people have expressed displeasure over the functioning of this government office.
"I fail to understand why government is not taking action against such officers. From last one week, I have being coming here from Rawalpora to meet the Director but his office bearers every time tell me that he is not here and when today I came with the hope that the Director will be available but unfortunately his office was locked again," said Sharif Ahmad of Kralpora.
