Early Times Report

JAMMU, Mar 6: The State Health Ministry' claims regarding increase in PG seats in broad specialties have fallen flat as Medical Council of India has granted only 13 more PG seats to the Government Medical College Jammu, while GMC Srinagar has got 30, thanks for not conducting Departmental Promotion Committee (DPC) of faculty members.
It is penitent to mentioned, Minister for Health Bali Bhagat assured Upper House that the Principal Secretary H&ME Department handed over the proposal for increase of 133 PG seats in GMC, Srinagar and 107 PG seats in GMC, Jammu, as one time increase in Medical Colleges of State for the year 2018-19.
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, through its communication dated March 6, 2018, has conveyed its approval for admitting 15 students in GMC Jammu and 29 for Srinagar for 2018-19.
As per notification, in GMC Jammu the total number of existing seats for MD Anaesthesiology was 5 while the seats available now are 10; the number of existing seats for MD Dermatology was 5 and now 2 more have been added; 2 more seats have been added to MD OBGY and making it 12, MD Paediatrics was 5 and now 6, MS ENT was 9 and now 4 and now total 13 seats, and the number of existing seats for MS Ophthalmology was 10 while the seats available now are 11. Similarly, the number of existing seats for MS (General Surgery) was 19 while the seats available now are 20.
Last year, for the session of 2017-18, GMC Jammu had got 13 seats for the session of 2017-18, while Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) Srinagar has got 20. ET had already highlighted that if the DPC of more than 70 faculty members shall not be conducted within some days, PG seats will cut by the Medical Council of India as major deficiency pointed out by the MCI Team.
A GMC faculty member said that again GMC Jammu has faced same as faced in past year in the form of sanction of less number of PG seats allotted to this institution (following then Principal of the GMC had been removed), thereby killing of the many PG aspirants.
He added that despite being repeatedly pulled up by the MCI, the administration of GMC Jammu had taken lightly to those instructions. That is why the MCI has allotted only 15 more seats, whereas the faculty members of GMC Jammu were expecting more seats for the s session. This notification has exposed the motive of the H&ME and Principal of the GMC Jammu.
"BJP is ruling both in the state and in the Centre but leaving no stone unturned to continues to ignore and humiliate Jammu region, since they came in power owing to which less seats to GMC Jammu as compared to Kashmir region," he added.
