After BJP's good show in RS poll it may be Modi VS Rahul in 2019
3/25/2018 11:10:22 PM
The BJP had expected atleast win from 25 seats in the Rajya Sabha but it had to remain content with 12 seats out of 25. The BJP bagged 12 of the 25 Rajya Sabha seats across six States for which biennial elections were held on, along with a bypoll in one State. In all, 33 candidates from 10 States were earlier declared elected unopposed. Major victory of the BJP from Uttar Pradesh has come as a relief to the BJP after it had lost its face in the State following a tie-up between the SP and the BSP. The counting process for one seat had not been concluded in Uttar Pradesh. However, the BJP claimed victory in all the nine seats it had contested. In all, the Congress won five seats, while the Trinamool Congress got four, the TRS three and the LDF and the Samajwadi Party (Jaya Bachchan) one each. On completion of voting, counting in Uttar Pradesh for 10 seats started after about a two-hour delay, following allegations by the Samajwadi Party and the BSP that two MLAs had cross-voted. BSP's Anil Kumar Singh had told the media that he was with "Maharaj-ji (Yogi Adityanath)." While the result for one seat had not been declared officially, eight seats went to the BJP and one SP candidate was declared winner. The BJP's win in Uttar Pradesh assumes significance as it comes on the heels of its by-poll loss to the SP backed by the BSP.
The BJP had enough MLAs to send eight candidates to the Upper House, but has now been able to send its ninth candidate as well, allegedly through cross-voting in its favour in West Bengal, all four Trinamool candidates - sitting Rajya Sabha member Nadimul Haque and first time nominees Subhasish Chakraborty, Abir Biswas and Santanu Sen - were declared elected. TMC-backed Congress candidate Abhishek Manu Singhvi also won. BJP's Sandeep Oraon and Congress candidate Dheeraj Sahu claimed victory in Jharkhand, where the Congress and the Jharkhand Vikas Morcha-Prajatantrik (JVM-P) had alleged that an MLA did not show his ballot to the party representative. But, the EC rejected the complaint after examining the video footage. Congress candidates Dr. L. Hanumanthaiah, Dr. Syed Naseer Hussain and G.S. Chandrashekar were declared winners, while the BJP-backed Rajeev Chandrasekhar also was elected in Karnataka.
This indicates that the Congress has forged alliance with not only TMC but is part of the grand alliance in other states and that has been the reason fore its five candidates to win the seat in the Rajya Sabha. Another indication is that BJP continues to be a major force to reckon with after its loss of face in the by-poll in UP and other states. And if the Congress manages to smoothen its relations with other parties it could prove a major force which may prove a major challenge to the BJP in 2019 general elections. And whether the Congress is able to retain its allies then only the grand alliance may pose a problem for the BJP. In fact the ensuing general elections may demonstrate whether Rahul Gandhi has gained his political weight or Modi has been able to retain his charisma. And the Rajya Sabha results is an indicator of the prowess of the BJP. But the BJP cannot take things lightly and it has to give a new impetus to its development programme. The problems pertaining to unemployment and price rise may prove an Achilles heel for the BJP. Hitherto, it has given ample time and opportunity to the Congress to launch a vicious campaign against the BJP led NDA Government. If the Congress campaign survives and may be able to strengthen its vote bank it could cause much damage to the BJP. One thing is certain the Congress has to bank on the support of other parties for staging a win in the next General elections and if it fails to win support from other political leaders it is bound to be doomed.
