Seminar on role of forests in climate change mitigation, water conservation held

Rajouri, Mar 25: J&K Youth Development Organisation (JKYDO) in collaboration with Integrated Watershed management Programme (IWMP) Rajouri, Himalayan Degree College & Forest department organised one day seminar on 'Role of Forests in Climate Change Mitigation and Water Conservation. The seminar was organised in the complex of Himalayan Degree College at Thandikassi and was presided over by Prof Saleem Wani. Students from eight degree colleges, Assistant Professors and young researchers participated in the seminar and participated in three events viz. Inter-College Poster making, declamation contest and quiz competition on the theme: Forests and Sustainable Cities, Nature for Water and Forests, Ecology, Environment and Climate change, respectively were also organized.
Dr.Mohd Hanief, chairman JKYDO, briefed the gathering about the importance of 'forests and water day' as per United Nation Millennium Development Goals-2030. Dr. Shreekar Pant, from BGSBU spoke in strength on preserving forests for preserving water sources, biodiversity and livelihoods. Dr. Asrar Gous, Director, Centre for hospitality and tourism, BGSBU and Kafeel Ahmed, general secretary, JKYDO exhorted the participants to raise awareness among the masses to conserve forest cover and water.
H.E.M College, Tariq Paramedical College and Tariq College of Education got 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes respectively in poster making while first three positions in declamation contest were shared by GDC, Poonch and H.E.M College. In Quiz competition the 1st, 2nd prizes were given to G.D.C Thannamandi, G.D.C, Surenkote while 3rd prize was shared by G.D.C Poonch and H.E.M College, respectively. Brig. P.P. Singh, Commander 120 Infantry Brigade, who was the chief guest, appreciated the efforts of JKYDO team for organizing the programme on a very relevant theme. "Conserve and manage the important natural resources of forests and water for sustainable national development" said Brig Singh. Prof. Saleem Wani proposed vote of thanks and congratulated the organizers and participants for making the event a success.
