PMUY, a non-starter in JK with scores of BPL families left out of scheme

Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Apr 14: A flagship programme launched by Government of India couple of years back has failed to live up to the expectations of the people since the desired results the scheme have not been achieved.
Pradhan Mantri Ujwalla Yojana (PMUY) was initiated by Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government at the centre in order to benefit the families who are poor and cannot afford to buy Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) gas connection from the market. The scheme might have achieved the desired results at the national level but it is a failure in the state due to some reasons. There are many families which despite being headed by women have not been given the LPG connection under PMUY.
"The scheme aims to provide relief to the poor families living in the nook and corner of the state. The officials who could have provided the list of poor families headed by women have not done their job in an able manner. As such the deserving families have been left to fend and face the hardships," said sources.
Sources said that although there are many women headed families these families were denied the benefits under the scheme. Instead of women headed families the LPG connections under the PMUY were given to families headed by men despite the fact that the families are economically well off.
"In Jammu & Kashmir the PMUY has lost its relevance and objectivity with the people belonging to Below Poverty Line (BPL) not able to accrue the benefits. The classification of families under BPL category has come up as a huge scandal in the state with the deserving left out of the scheme," said sources.
Sources said that people belonging to affluent families have been clubbed under the BPL category with the poor people classified as people living Above Poverty Line (APL). They said that non-classification of people under BPL category has meant that PMUY is a big flop in Jammu & Kashmir.
"It is imperative that the people at helm look into the loopholes of the scheme so that the benefits trickle down to grassroots level. The government should ensure that the real beneficiaries are selected for the scheme while as the affluent ones are denied the benefits. The PMUY is a good scheme provided it is implemented in letter and spirit as is being done in different parts of country," said sources.
PMUY aims to safeguard the health of women & children by providing them with a clean cooking fuel - LPG, so that they don't have to compromise their health in smoky kitchens or wander in unsafe areas collecting firewood.
The scheme was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 1st, 2016 in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh. Under the scheme, five crore LPG connections have to be provided to BPL families with a support of Rs.1600 per connection in three years.
