Kathua murder case divides State BJP
CBI probe or no CBI probe
4/15/2018 12:31:50 AM
Early Times Report
jammu, Apr 14: The alleged Kathua murder and rape case is hurting the BJP. It could even lead to a major revolt within the party. The two sacked ministers, Lal Singh and CP Ganga - have already spoken on the issue and defended their visit to Kootah, where they shared the dais with Hindu Ekta Manch leaders, who had been demanding CBI probe into the alleged murder of a Bakerwal girl in Rassana village of Kathua.
Lal Singh even went to the extent of exposing the party leadership, saying that he and CP Ganga didn't visit Kootah on their own and that it was the state BJP president Sat Sharma, who directed them to visit Kootah. He made this statement on Friday the day party high command directed them to tender resignation. On Saturday, in-charge BJP Ram Madhav also defended their visit to Kootah during press conference he addressed today at Jammu and asserted that they committed no wrong. It is a different story that their resignation was accepted today by the party with Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti expressing happiness. Why not?
The resignation of the two ministers and their statements after they put in papers is one part of the story, which clearly indicates that things would worsen for the BJP in the next few days after the sacked ministers speak out. Lal Singh had already declared that he would meet press persons in a day or two to explain everything and asserted that it was to please "Syed Ali Shah Geelani that the PDP-BJP government opposed CBI probe".
The other part of the story is also not promising for the BJP. The demand for CBI probe has vertically divided the BJP with Kashmir-based BJP leaders supporting the Crime Branch and the chargesheet that it prepared and filed and state BJP spokesperson Sunil Sethi questioning the Crime branch chargesheet and favouring probe an independent agency.
Sunil Sethi has said that BJP's stand is clear on Kathua incident.
"We demand that an impartial probe should be conducted. There are number of loopholes in the chargesheet of Crime Branch. Many questions have been left unanswered. We stick to our demand that the case should be probed by an impartial agency," Sethi reportedly said, adding that the people, who are agitating, can approach the court to demand CBI probe.
Contrarily, the party's Kashmir chapter has toed the line the PDP, the NC, the Congress, the Kashmir lawyers and separatists have taken. They have opposed the demand for a CBI probe and said they were satisfied with the Crime Branch's work. "We are very much satisfied with the CB probe," said Sofi Yousuf, BJP's MLC from Kashmir. "Our police is not incompetent force. They have filed a report. We are proud of our police and Crime Branch," he was quoted as saying.
Sofi further reportedly said: "No criminal should be defended and those involved in the heinous crime should be hanged in public. If we doubt J&K police then why we are paying salaries to them and why do we need them then. The criminals involved in rape and murder of minor girl should be awarded stern punishment".
Fayaz Bhat, another Kashmir-based BJP leader, said the same thing. He said: "They are proud of Crime Branch. Some honest and respectable officers have investigated the case and we all should be satisfied with it".
"Those people and lawyers, who come on streets in support of the criminals, should be dealt under the law and their licenses should be cancelled so that in future none stands for the criminals," Bhat further said, adding that "an innocent girl has been raped and murdered ruthlessly and people are drawing political scores out of it, which is very unfortunate".
The contradictory stands taken by the Jammu-based and Kashmir-based BJP leaders show that the BJP is a divided house. But more than that, the sacking of BJP ministers and contradictory statements being made by BJP leaders have only added to the problems of the party, which is already facing wrath of Jammu people for what call "its total surrender".
