Kathua incident helps PDP-BJP 'divert' attention from Kashmir
4/15/2018 12:31:07 AM

Early Times Report
jammu, Apr 14: The political developments surrounding Kathua rape and murder case have seemingly helped the ruling PDP to shift attention from situation in restive Kashmir while its ally BJP seems to be helping it on this front.
Sources said in the wake of rise in militancy-related incidents in Kashmir, particularly in the south, the PDP was looking for means to divert attention from the Valley to something else.
Sources said resignation of two BJP ministers Lal Singh and Chandra Prakash Ganga has come as a shot in the arm on this front.
"The controversy surrounding Kathua rape and murder case followed by staging a controversy against ally BJP, and subsequent resignation of two of its ministers, has helped the coalition to shift attention from the volatile situation in the Valley," said a PDP leader on the condition of anonymity.
Officials said the situation in Kashmir has been so alarming that over 90 persons, including 12 Army jawans and 12 cops apart from 25 civilians have been killed in the Valley this year alone.
"There's no end to rise in militancy related incidents while more and more youth are joining militant ranks. So, given the embarrassment to failure in bringing situation under control, the government found it opportune to take advantage of the Kathua incident," observers said.
The PDP leaders have come under scanner for sudden protests over Kathua. On April 13, senior PDP leader and Women's Commission Chairperson Nayeema Ahmed Mahjoor attended a sit-in at Jammu University. "What made her attend the protests when she was the first to visit the victim's family on behalf of government? If no protests that time, why suddenly now?" asked a Jammu university teacher.
Political observers said till last week PDP ministers had been sharing dais with Industries Minister Chandra Prakash Gang, and also Chowdhary Lal Singh. "If till few days ago the two parties had no issues over them having attended rally in Kathua, why sudden cry over it," said a senior leader in mainstream politics.
Sources said the twin parties in power are on the same page on the controversy.
