Satrari, a village with two ponds, no water | | | Ashwani Sharma
Early Times Report
Udhampur, Apr 30: The authorities seem more interested in inaugurating new water bodies rather than protecting and preserving the old ones. A very ancient pond in village Satrari tehsil Majalta in Udhampur has dried up due to official apathy. Once a source of water for the cattle, the locals also used the water from the pond for cleaning purposes has nothing to offer now. A dry piece of land is left behind with weeds having grown all over. Surprisingly the concerned authorities have constructed another pond in the close vicinity hardly at a distance of 30 from this ancient pond. The locals said there was no need of going for the new pond. "The revival of the old pond would prove more useful," they said. Sham Lal the village head said that the authorities concerned would have first consulted village heads before wasting money like this. The present scenario is that amidst the presence of two ponds in the village the people have to take their cattle for drinking water to far off places and women too have to travel long distances for water. |
