At Betaab Valley, Tourism deptt makes mockery of English
'Visitors are requested to US dustbins'!

Early Times Report
srinagar, Apr 30: At a time when the state government is striving hard to lure tourists towards the picturesque Kashmir Valley, the pathetic infrastructure coupled with the non- serious approach of the Tourism department could act as a major spoilsport in destroying the vital tourism sector here.
A clear reflection of government's non- seriousness and inefficiency could be found at a prestigious tourist attraction Betab Valley- Pahalgam wherein the entry board welcoming the tourists is filled with incorrect English and grammatical blunders. Such is the inefficiency of the administration that the welcome board drafted by the Chief Executive Officer of Pahalgam has a plethora of incorrect words and mistakes that could easily be found even by a kid studying in Class 5th.
Ironically, no one in the department has paid any heed to such a blunder that is shamming the state ruthlessly in front of the national and international tourists visiting the place.
On the notice board erected just at the entry gate of Betaab Valley by CEO Pahalgam, the English sentences are written in such an erroneous way that one wonders how come people at the helm have overlooked it.
One para states: "Playing of Cricket inside the Park ARE not allowed." Another para reads: "Visitors are requested to US dustbins." Yet another para reads: "Plucking of any kind of flowers ARE not allowed."
And this one goes beyond the reach of one's reason: "Don't DEFUSE the Property."
There were so many youngsters who were staring at the notice board and laughing out loud at government such inefficiency and incompetence. "Even a kid of Class 5 cannot write such pathetic English nowadays. I really wonder how come they have become executive officers in Jammu and Kashmir. This is what happens when the government is non-serious and erroneous," says a tourist from West- Bengal's Kolkatta while showing to his relatives the mastery of language being exhibited with great proud by the CEO Pahalgam.
The story doesn't end here. Inside the park, there is not even a single washroom for the use. As the men there posted by the department of tourism charge Rs 5 to every person wanting to use the toilet facility, inside the washrooms, the situation is pathetic and even not worth to talk about. The washrooms have not been cleaned for weeks and the stink inside them has turned intolerable. "Is this what we are offering to the tourists who come to Valley from far-flung places? What I believe is that the situation not alone affects the growth of the tourism sector in the state. It is the inefficiency of the people at the helm which is also one of the major reasons for the decline of tourism in Kashmir," said Saqib Ahmad, a student from Srinagar who was there in Pahalgam along with his friends.
According to figures from the Tourism department, some 403,000 tourists visited the Valley during the first four months of 2016, but only 181,000 tourists arrived during the year 2017 - a drop of 56 percent.
