Modi's one on one talks with Jinping may usher in better Sino-India ties
4/30/2018 11:44:06 PM
The one on one talks between Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, and the Chinese President, XI Jinping, were aimed at improving bilateral relations between India and China. The first major development has emerged out of the t alks is the declaration that Modi and Jinping may issue separate orders to the Armies on the border to build trust and confidence and avoid resorting to some kind of misadventure which may result in the freezing of the relations between New Delhi and Beijing. In fact before the summit started the relations between India and China had touched a new low and one does hope that the one on one meeting may result in improving relations between the two sides.Since 1959 China has emerged as the main enemy of India following the interest shown by New Delhi in granting asylum to Tibetian spiritual leader the Dalai Lama. That Beijing was enraged by this step which is manifest in the 1962 war that China launched against India.
Since then the bilateral relations are frozen and Modi is to restart his process of winning the confidence of China that is the reason for Modi to have gone to China to make an attempt at wooing the Chinese leadership, .Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping began their last round of one-on-one talks on the second day of a two-day informal summit aimed at forging consensus to improve the bilateral relations and address the contentious issues straining their ties. The two leaders walked together along thepicturesqueEast Lake. They were accompanied by two translators. They also had tea after the walk..Taking India-China relations on a forward-looking path, charting the future direction of the relationship! Modi and Chinese President Xi take a walk together along the East Lake in Wuhan today morning," Ministry of External Affairs spokesman Raveesh Kumar tweeted.Modi and Xi then took a boat ride in the East Lake. The two leaders were seen talking to each other in relax mood inside the house boat indicating that the two have developed trust in each other and it is to be seen whether this trust is manifested in the easing of relations between India and China.
They would conclude their talks with one-on-one lunch hosted by Xi in the honour of Modi. The Prime Minister is due to leave for home after that. The two leaders on Friday held extensive talks amid the warmth and bonhomie. They started the summit talks at the Hubei Provincial Museum where Xi took Modi around introducing the historic artefacts. The museum walk scheduled for 20 minutes lasted over 40 minutes after which they began one-on-one talks. The summit was stated to be unique as the two leaders have no pressure and obligation to strike any agreements nor make big announcements but focus mainly on candid discussions on solutions to some of the vexed problems like the boundary question and other issue. There is no major issues that have widened the distance between New Delhi and Beijing except the border issue which has been hanging fire for the last 40 years. And the border issue has assumed new dimensions with the stand off at Doklam and the occasional intrusion by the Chinese Army into the Ladakh border belt and that in Arunachal Pradesh.
