Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, May 14: Many tall buildings have come up on the either side of Srinagar-Tangmarg road, with the authorities tight-lipped on such illegal constructions.
According to sources, many buildings and shopping complexes have come up in violation of building bylaws, but the authorities are not acting to stop such constructions due to unknown reasons.
Right from Shalteng to Narbal and from Magam to Tangmarg, many new buildings were constructed on both the sides, with the result pedestrians and tourists are finding it hard to difficult to cross the areas. Sources said the illegal constructions have also come up along key highways, be it near Srinagar-Gulmarg or Srinagar-Bandipora in violation of the Land Revenue Act (LRA), by converting the agricultural land into commercial/residential purposes. The Municipal Committees and Councils and R&B department employees have given a free hand to the owners of these building by keeping themselves far off from the sight of construction so that nobody can raise a question over the illegal construction of these buildings, sources informed.
Sources said one fails to understand that who has given them the permission of construction on highways when it is completely banned by the law enforcing agencies.
Without knowledge of the concerned officials, a layman has no courage to raise a permanent or an ordinary structure whatsoever on the national highway, unless they don't have a patronage of some of the people, be it a political worker or any other known person.
There were clear cut directions from the court as well as from the government that there should be no construction on the highways, but irony is that the authorities have failed to keep check on violations of building plan which has resulted in illegal constructions.
In the previous year, a notification for road widening was issued and according to law no new structure can be raised after the issuance of notification, and as for as Srinagar-Gulmarg road is concerned, the department knows that there could be negative impact on tourists which could badly affect the tourism industry also, as tourists would not prefer to go in the congested areas, sources added.
