Mehbooba looks towards Congress to keep PDP together
Party leadership promoted family raaj, alleges Abid Ansari
7/1/2018 11:16:26 PM
Early Times Report
jammu, July 1: As the resentment is brewing within the MLAs of Peoples Democratic Party, the party leadership in order to keep its flock together is reportedly trying to strike a deal with the Congress party, which has 12 MLAs in the 87 member assembly, to form a government in Jammu and Kashmir.
Sources told Early Times that the PDP president Mehbooba Mufti has been camping in New Delhi for the past two days and she has also met the chief of All India Congress Committee Sonia Gandhi.
The state Congress leaders are claiming that they have no information about the development. "Had any such development taken place we would have been in loop," a Congress leader said.
"The PDP has 28 MLAs and if the Congress agrees to support the PDP it would only make it 40 seats. If the three other MLAs i.e. Hakim Yasin, Er Rashid and M Y Tarigami agree to support the PDP still the party would need one more MLA," said an analyst.
Sources said that reports about PDP's old ally Bharatiya Janata Party trying to engineer a split within the PDP has sent the alarm bells ringing within the PDP camp. "The PDP leadership fears that if Sajad Lone, who has been assigned the job to formulate a roadmap for new government formation in the state, succeeds in wooing the PDP MLAs it would be a big embarrassment for the party and Mehbooba Mufti would be left only with her few loyalists," they added.
"The PDP leaders fear that if the government is not formed the rebels within the party would get a chance to dictate the terms and the only way to keep the party intact is by forming the government," they added.
In a related development PDP MLA Abid Ansari on Sunday lashed out at the party leadership for what he said, "promoting family rule" in the state. "Sartaj Madni, who is the maternal uncle of the PDP president, was nominated as the PDP vice-president. He didn't know anything about politics. Whenever we approached him with any issue he never paid any heed towards it. All the relatives of the top PDP leaders were given plum postings," Ansari told reporters in Srinagar.
He said that he would do anything for the people who voted for him in 2014 elections. "I have kept all my options open," Ansari added.
An analyst said, "Even if Mehbooba succeeds to get the support from the Congress the government won't last long as it would be dependent on the support of whimsical people like Er Rashid."
