BJP celebrating its breakdown in ULB elections
10/24/2018 10:02:20 PM
Mahadeep Singh Jamwal

Calculated spell of ULB elections is over and the results thereof are now matter of analysis. The BJP is on rock and roll owing to its unexpected return of candidates on BJP tickets. It is celebrating its breakdown in ULB elections. It is much jubilant over its performance especially in valley. Out of total tally of 598 wards in valley leaving aside Ladakh region only 182 wards went into contest. In 231 wards candidates were declared winner as uncontested and 185 wards remain vacant. Of the 413 wards that returned its candidates as their representative major chunk went in favor of 171 independent candidates i.e. approximately 42%, INC 138 i.e. approximately 33% and BJP just 100 approximately 24%. This all contested as well as uncontested chunk mandated much better in favor of INC whereas BJP seats are because of the reason of boycott by NC and PDP that have considerable presence in all these districts of Kashmir valley. If we look into the cross section of Kashmir valley i.e. North Kashmir, Central Kashmir, South Kashmir and Ladakh region, we find a different story in all four sections of Valley.
1. In north Kashmir comprising of Baramulla, Kupwara and Ganderbal districts, out of total 170 wards, 26 remain vacant. Out of 144 wards both contested as well as uncontested, BJP got 31 seats i.e. approximately 22%, INC got 44 seats approximately 31% and Independent got 68 seats approximately 47% share. The winning of BJP is also owing to the facts of boycott by NC and PDP.
2. In the prestigious Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) having 74 wards, the major chunk comprising of 66 as contested seats, the BJP got just 4 seats and major chunk of 53 seats secured by Independent among boycott by NC and PDP. When we shift our focus to other two districts of central Kashmir i.e Ganderbal and Budgam, these districts having 89 wards Budgam remain vacant on 28 wards. Out of 61 contested as well as uncontested seats, BJP secured just 7 wards i.e. 11%, INC secured 25 seats approximately 41% and Independent claimed 29 wards approximately 48%.
3. In the South Kashmir, wherein placed main hub of PDP, 131 wards approximately 48% have remained vacant and in rest 134 wards of South Kashmir including contested as well as uncontested BJP got 43%, INC got 40% and Independent claimed approximately 16% seat share. This scenario is altogether because of boycott of main parties in this region i.e. PDP and NC.
4. The Ladhakh valley with 26 wards in Kargil and Leh districts, BJP's chapter has been finally closed with big zero in their favor and INC registering win in 19 and Independent in 7 wards.
With respect to Kashmir valley we can conclude very safely that the big statements of BJP on valley are just to please himself and nothing more than idiom "drowning man clutches at a straw". They have forgotten that just 4.7% polling is the mockery of democratic set up and candidate securing just 3 votes out of 100 is the winner in Indian democracy and becomes the representative of all 100 voters. This can happen only in India. Instead of feeling ashamed of this type of polling, BJP is dancing to the tunes and PM from Delhi congratulating the voters of J&K. What a short sightedness?
The return of BJP candidates in Jammu region may be somehow consoling to the party but they should not forget that whatever number they have achieved, its main credit goes to NC and PDP boycott of the elections and they should not take their success as acceptance by the Jammuites as representation in ULB is confined to divide of votes even in family members. This achievement is nothing when we consider the heavy weights of BJP from Jammu such as S/sh. Kavinder Gupta speaker and laterally Dy.CM, Sat Sharma state President and battery of MLAs from Jammu. The return of 212 BJP candidates of the 521 wards, when analyzed in cross sections of all the districts, we find the district wise position of BJP is self speaking about acceptance of this party.
1. The 43 seats in Jammu district secured by BJP are direct result of boycott of elections by NC and PDP.
2. In Kathua BJP except Hiranagar that too at the cutting edge failed to head the council and committees in Basohli, Billawar, Kathua, Lakhanpur, and Nagri and achieved just its remembrance in this area. In the erstwhile coalition government the district stand represented by three ministers S/Sh Nirmal Kumar Singh Dy.CM (MLA from Billawar), Ch.Lal Singh (MLA from Basohli and now on tag page of BJP) and Rajiv Jasrotia. (MLA from Kathua).
3. In Samba district except Bari Brahmna that too at the cutting edge BJP failed to head the council and committees at Samba, Ramgarh, and Vijaypur. The district was represented in coalition with PDP by S/Sh Chander Parkash Ganga (MLA from Vijaypur) and Devinder Kumar Manyal (MLA from Samba).
4. In Rajouri district it fetched majority in Sunderbani and Nowshehra but failed badly at the district headquarters with just 6 of the 17 seats and big zero in Thanamandi and Kalakote. The MLA kalakote happened to be minister in coalition government and much roaring state president of BJP is also from this district and MLA from Nowshehra.
5. In Poonch district it failed to save its face and secured just 4 seats in Haveli and big zero in Surankot.
6. In Udhampur district at the district headquarter it just got four seats and failed to install its chairman and in Chenani also it failed to secure majority when sitting MLA is from BJP, whereas in Ramnagar it just finished at the cutting edge of majority.
7. In Reasi district it is in a position to head Katra whereas at the district headquarter Reasi it miserably failed to muster majority even after its MLA from BJP and a minister in coalition government.
8. In Ramban district humiliating defeat in Banihal with zero account and miserably failed to secure majority in Ramban and Batote even when sitting MLA of Ramban is from BJP.
9. In Doda district, out of 37 wards it just registered its presence with 3 seats in Doda, 3 seats in Bhaderwah and just opening its account with one seat in Thathri. Both sitting MLAs Mr. Shakti Raj Parihar from Doda and Sh. Daleep Singh Parihar from Bhaderwah are from BJP and MLA doda Mr. Shakti Raj Parihar happened to be minister in coalition government.
10. In Kishtwar district it just registered only one seat. It is most humiliating defeat for BJP as sitting MLA from Kishtwar Mr. Sunil Kumar Sharma happened to be minister in coalition government.
Now due to BJP's complete failure to head maximum number of councils and municipalities, it will adopt its notorious formulae of horse trading as seen in many state earlier. In the attempt Ex-Dy CM Mr. Kavinder Gupta's visit to Udhampur (as reported in print media) is a step forward and similar BJP agents may have fanned in other districts also. It is just a power hungry party and its top brass speak of 'Sab ka saath sab ka vikas". In my considered opinion the ULB elections across the state is not an occasion for BJP to celebrate its win but to introspect and look for its failures. At the occasion 'Parsoon Joshi's' lyric of film 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag' comes to my mind for the innocent voters once again deceived by BJP that goes as: "Sunsaan Raat Ab Aisi Raat, Rakh Dil Pe Haath, Hum Saath Saath, Bolo Kya Karenge. Bolo kya karenge… Hawan karenge, hawan karenge, hawan karenge - Jeev Jantu Sab So Rahe Honge, Bhoot-Pret Sab Ro Rahe Honge, Aisi Raat Sunsan Raat, Rakh Dil Pe Hath, Hum Sath Sath, Bolo Kya Karenge .. Hawan karenge, hawan karenge, hawan karenge".
