Two militants killed in encounter with police, security forces at Sueth-Nowgam

SRINAGAR, Oct 24: Two militants owing allegiance to Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) were killed in an encounter with police and security forces at Sueth near Nowgam in the outskirts of summer capital of the state.
Reports said that last night police and security forces received an input that some militants are hiding in a house at Sueth-Nowgam. A cordon was laid around the house and the entire locality was put under a cordon. Search operations were launched in the area and as the house was encircled the militants hiding inside fired upon police and security forces.
Following this a full-fledged encounter ensued between the two sides and it culminated with the death of two militants. Some arms and ammunition were recovered by police and security forces from the site of the encounter. The slain militants were identified as Sabzar Ahmad Sofi and Asif Ahmad Shergojri.
Clashes broke out between groups of youth and security forces as soon as the encounter ended. Majority of the shops and commercial establishments in the uptown areas of Srinagar remained closed following the encounter. The district administration ordered for the closure of schools and colleges in Srinagar. University of Kashmir, Central University of Kashmir and Islamic University of Science & Technology also suspended the class work for today.
A police spokesman said that security forces in the outskirts of Srinagar at Wanbal under the jurisdiction of Nowgam police station launched a cordon and search operation today morning based on credible input about the presence of militants.
"During search operation, militants fired upon the search party, which was retaliated leading to an encounter. In the ensuing encounter two militants were neutralized. The killed militants were identified as Sabzar Ahmad Sofi and Asif Ahmad Shergojri. Both were affiliated with proscribed terror outfit HM," said the spokesman.
The spokesman said that Sabzar Ahmad Sofi son of Bashir Ahmad Sofi resident of Naina Sangam in district Anantnag had joined militant ranks in 2016 and was involved in several attacks on security establishments and many other civilian atrocities in district Anantnag. He was involved in many cases including FIR No. 22/2018 under section 13 ULAP Act at Police Station Bijbehara.
'Pertinently, Sabzar was involved in killing of one civilian lady namely Biba wife of Mohammad Yousuf Matto resident of Naina Batapora in the evening of 28-10-2016. Asif Ahmad Shergojri alias Khubaib son of Ali Mohammad Shergojri resident of Khiram Anantnag had joined the militant ranks this year in January and was actively involved in attacks on security establishments and civilian atrocities in the area," said the spokesman.
The spokesman said that Asif was involved in many cases and the prominent cases include FIR No. 04/2018 under section 13 ULAP Act registered at Police Station Srigufwara and FIR No. 15/2018 under section 15/2018 under section 451, 392,506 RPC, 7/25 Arms Act registered at Police Station Srigufwara.
