Early Times Report
KUPWARA, Oct 24: Prolonged power cuts in Handwara and Kupwara villages cause inconvenience to students preparing for various examinations scheduled to start in Kashmir from today.
The local residents of Nutnoosu said that the power supply is being snapped for several hours despite they are paying power tariffs on monthly basis. Unscheduled power cuts continue to irk consumers in the metered and unmetered areas of Handwara tehsil and Kupwara villages of this north Kashmir district. According to sources, there are many villages in Kupwara district including Nutnoosa , Awoora, Anderhama, Drugmulla, Kupwara town, and other adjoining areas.
These villages are facing acute shortage of power, be it a summer or winter, electricity is snapped for several hours, said sources.
Muneer Ahmad from Handwara told early times that the power supply was erratic for the past one week and voltage was also low and that too in early winter, where one needs an extra voltage.
He said that "The electricity is disrupted for almost 12 hours in a day despite that we are paying a monthly power tariff on regular basis. The voltage is so low that it fails to illuminate even a small room. We have no choice but to take dinner in candlelight.
Whereas the people from other border areas are also observing the same treatment, according to them the power is playing hide and seek during night hours, the supply went off for hours. They said they were forced to pay the power tariff according to the curtailment schedule but electricity was not provided to them. However Students said they were the worst sufferers. "We are forced to study under candlelight. One major reason behind dismal performance in studies is erratic power supply. We are preparing for board examinations that are to e scheduled from tomorrow and due to no electricity we could not concentrate on our studies, said Baharat from Handwara town.
We fail to understand that, what sort of curtailment schedule is this in which we have to see the electricity for 2-3 hours and somewhere for one hour only, said locals.
