Early Times Report

Jammu, Oct 24: The government may have taken action over illegal appointments made in the Urban Local Bodies in the past, but the backdoor appointments scandal in Legislative Assembly remains untouched.
Sources told Early Times that a week ago, the government took strict action after reports of State Vigilance Organization and terminated the services of several persons who were engaged as casual and need based workers in Vijaypur MC and ULBs Jammu in 2010.
"The Housing and Urban Development Department had placed the matter before the Governor and Advisor concerned for their instructions on the issue. Finally, the decision was taken for cancellation of illegal appointments/regularization," said sources.
Significantly, a number of illegal appointments were made in Legislative Assembly in the past and the issue came into limelight. Thereafter the
matter was handed over the Vigilance Organisation. Subsequently the investigating agency found gross irregularities in the backdoor appointments by the Assembly Speakers in successive governments. But no action was initiated by the government ostensibly under political pressure.
Although the Vigilance categorically proved that no proper procedure was adopted in making appointments, the backdoor appointees managed to get a court stay after the Vigilance held their appointment illegal.
Shockingly, the backdoor appointees were given undue promotions. Now the Governor's administration has been showing strict approach towards the illegal appointments made in various departments. But the question in the mind of several people is whether the administration will also take action against these gross irregularities?
