Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Oct 27: The Wakf Board has failed to restore the glory of many shrines in various district of Kashmir Valley, even there are some employees at these shrines who are treating the Wakf as their fiefdom and are looting its money at will.
There are scores of shrines in the Valley, some of them many centuries old. These shrines are assets of Kashmiri culture, as they have been revered by people of all communities.
Sources said the Wakf employees have made a fortune out of the money donated by the devotees to these shrines. "There is no doubt that Wakf Board is being run like a mafia. Employees are appointed there in a clandestine manner. No advertisement is ever issued for appointing people in the Board," sources said.
In the recent past, some people on these shrines have claimed to be its employees, but after enquiring it was found that they were either appointed on recommendations of some politicians or other influential persons, said sources.
Sources further said that from south Kashmir to north Kashmir, and in summer capital of Kashmir, there are hundreds of shrines, where people have looted the general public on the name of Wakf, and actually there is no accountability in the system, which has created a doubt among the general masses.
"The jobless people who have no business at all were given charges of these shrines. Basically there are some greedy people that are minting money in the name of Wakf. If a signboard of Wakf on a wall is everything, then one can imagine what would be the internal matters of these Wakf boards", sources alleged.
They said that there are some famous shrines in different districts that have a great income, but not even a fifty percent of these donations is spent for their restorations.
People come from far of places with their firm beliefs over these religious saints and shrines, but one may ask the concerned people or authorities who claim that they are caretakers of these shrines where are the donations that are being taken from devotees, sources asked.
Sources said that the old structures that were either built by many well-known architects have not been renovated yet, and there is no infrastructure available for devotees at these shrines.
"The Wakf Board and the people who were engaged as caretakers of these shrines have miserably failed to restore the pristine glory of these shrines which is big question mark about the transparency and accountability on their system," sources added.
