| LAHDC raises demand for Ladakh Union Territory status with Governor | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Dec 3: A delegation of Leh's Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) met Jammu-Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik on Monday requesting him to persuade the Centre to grant Union Territory status to Ladakh.
Led by LAHDC chairman Jamyang Tsering Namgyal, the delegation also demanded opening of the Kailash Mansarovar route from Ladakh and inclusion of Bhoti language in the 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution.
The meeting comes days after Thupstan Chhewang, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP from Ladakh, resigned citing non-fulfilment of the promise for the UT.
According to reports, Chhewang said that his party and central leaders showed little concern to fulfil the promise made in the last Lok Sabha election.
He had also said that the promise to make the Bhoti language included in the 8th schedule is yet to be fulfilled.
Meanwhile, the delegation also urged the Governor to impress upon the air transport operators to fix a cap on airfares or framing flat flight rate for local people of Ladakh and the government employees working in the Ladakh region.
They demanded exemption from GST for the Scheduled Tribes living in Ladakh region, and carving out a separate administrative Division for Ladakh with Kargil and Leh districts.
Various other issues relating to filling of vacant posts and creation of posts in Government institutions of Ladakh and release of funds for various important projects were also raised with the Governor. |
