Early Times Report
.
JAMMU, Dec 3: The growing drug menace has been a cause of concern for people of Jammu region especially after the drug mafia facing action in neighboring Punjab since the formation of Cap(retd) Amrinder Singh Government last year.
Sources said majority of drug mafia from neighboring Punjab have now concentrated on Jammu region and huge quantity of drugs are being supplied in the region especially in border districts of Kathua and Samba.
The unemployed youth in the region fall prey to drug addiction and their number is increasing day by day, sources said.
Sources said that after "Udta Punjab" it is now Udta Jammu as the region has been under the grip of drug mafia due to the failure of the Government to take punitive action against the mafia gangs.
Sources said the drugs in huge quantities are supplied in the State from neighboring Punjab, Himachal across the border through LoC and International border as well as from Kashmir Valley.
Sources said there is a Nexus between Punjab drug mafia and smugglers in Kashmir.
The Charas and Hashish which are grown in various areas of Kashmir especially in the villages falling on Bank of river Jehlum are smuggled to Jammu, Punjab and Delhi.
Even huge quantities of charas and brown sugar has been seized by police in Jammu and there hardly goes any day when police does not seize charas, brown sugar and intoxicating drugs in the different parts of Jammu.
Sources said the drug smugglers coming on foot crossing river Ravi, board a train or other mode of transport sell the same in different parts of Jammu through their agents.
Sources said the youth have become so lured to drug addiction that they indulge in thefts including chain snatchings etc to purchase the drugs.
People are worried and concerned for the same saying one generation has been perished by drug menace and in case immediate steps were not taken Jammu will earn the dubious distinction of "Udta Jammu".
