Bodies of two swept by avalanche recovered

KUPWARA, Jan 24: Bodies of two people who were swept away by an avalanche in Lolab the previous day, were recovered on Thursday by a rescue team of army's 18 Rashtriya Rifles.
According to sources that bodies of Bashir Ahmad Hajam S/O Mohd Younis and Mam-Ud Din Hajam S/O Najam-Ud-Din of Ring Warnow were recovered by the rescue team, quipped with latest tools.
"After hectic efforts by the locals, police and army, the bodies have been recovered from forest area", said sources adding that three persons left home to see their cattle in the upper belt of Rang Warnow forest area. One of them returned by evening and informed the police and administration that there was a snow avalanche in the area that swept the other two.
However a senior police official said that, two persons were missing from yesterday evening, we were informed by the locals that, a group of three hunters had gone missing, among which one was lucky to have returned to his home.
"We launched a rescue operation today at 1:30 in the afternoon and around 5 pm in the evening, the bodies were handed over to the relatives for the last rites", the police official told ET.
The police official said that in the upper reaches of Warnow, almost 6-7 feet of snow had accumulated, however he identified the duo as Bashir Ahmad Hajam and Mamdin Hajam of Ring Warnow, close to Lolab area.
In view of avalanche threat in nine avalanche prone districts of Kashmir division, Divisional Comm-issioner Kashmir, Baseer Ahmad Khan on Thursday directed concerned DCs to take all the precautionary measures and keep the SDRF, Police and Para-medical staff ready with ambulances to avert any untoward incident.
The spokesman said that warning has been issued for the avalanche prone areas in district Anantnag, Kulgam, Budgam, Baramulla, Kupw-ara, Bandipora, Ganderbal, Kargil and Leh.
