Gandhi Nagar threatened by indiscriminate dumping of garbage
Swacchta Abhiyaan takes a dent

Early Times Report
Jammu, Mar 11: With Jammu city been declared as one of the dirtiest cities of the country, even the posh locality of Gandhi Nagar is grappling with the menace of indiscriminate dumping of garbage thereby causing hazardous unhygienic conditions for the residents.
The indiscriminate dumping of garbage in and around high-end A/B and B/B Blocks of Gandhi Nagar locality is posing serious health hazards for the residents of the area. Heaps of garbage can be seen at any given point of time, but the authorities concerned have failed to pay any heed to this issue of grave concern for the residents.
People from nearby localities are dumping garbage on the road near Auqaf Market leading to Railway Station and Nanak Nagar. As the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) does not carry out regular cleaning, the garbage remains dumped for weeks and months. As a result, the residents are prone to various communicable diseases.
"The situation has worsened now since the Municipal authorities have failed to collect the garbage on regular basis. We are forced to live under such terrible conditions. Water logging is another problem which is a breeding ground for mosquitoes and other insects. The residents of other areas bring refuse in their vehicles and dump here only. The entire filth gets spread on the road. Even cows and dogs gather there which leads to frequent traffic jams," S S Sethi, a local resident said, narrating the tale of woes.
Another resident, A S Modi, said, "The Municipal Corporation has made this point a permanent garbage dumping site though it had removed all the large containers from entire Gandhi Nagar area but this one is yet to be taken away. By looking at the unhygienic condition of the spot, it seems that the government's campaign of clean India has failed to yield any results."
"When a posh area like Gandhi Nagar is facing such insanitation then the latest Swachh Survekshan's report on Jammu's cleanliness were a real testimony to the state of affairs of the city's hygiene and sanitation," he added.
Ironically, a photograph of the site with a building adjacent to it displaying a banner of the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) having pictures of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and others is literally mocking at the much publicized Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.
It is pertinent to mention here that in the Swachh Survekshan-2019, Jammu city sustained a severe blow as it received the worst ranking of all years slipping to 329th position out of 425 cities where the survey was conducted. Not only Jammu scored a low ranking but it slipped down 117 ranks from the previous year's ranking of 212.
