Early Times Report
Jammu, Mar 11: Decision of the Election Commission to defer J&K Assembly elections has exposed leadership of Kashmir centric parties which had boycotted recently held Panchayats and Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) polls.
In the months of October and November, there was competition among these parties to demonize democratic institutions to instigate people against participating in the grass roots democracy. These Kashmir centric parties had launched a campaign against these grass roots democracy and termed the elections as farce. Interestingly after Election Commission had announced to defer Assembly elections these Kashmir centric parties were unanimous in criticizing Union Government.
Two ex-chief ministers and other politicians, who had boycotted assembly polls, have expressed their anger against deferring of assembly elections. It appears these leaders are more worried about their own power instead of empowering people at the grass-root level.
Blaming it on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, National Conference vice-president Omar Abdullah described it as "an abject surrender to anti-India forces".
"The failure to conduct Assembly elections on time in the state is an indicator that the PM has surrendered to Pakistan, to the militants and to the Hurriyat. First time since 1996, the Assembly elections in J&K are not being held on time," Omar said in a tweet.
"The abject surrender to anti-India forces is a crying shame," he tweeted.
PDP president and former CM Mehbooba Mufti said, "the decision to hold only parliamentary elections in J&K confirms sinister designs of the Government of India. Not letting people elect a government is antithetical to the very idea of democracy. Also a tactic of buying time to dis-empower people by pushing an agenda that suits their ulterior motives."
