No Assembly polls in J&K, bad news for Kashmir centric parties
'Fall in line or quit politics'
3/11/2019 11:38:50 PM
Early Times Report
Jammu, Mar 11: Kashmir centric parties in one voice were demanding that Assembly elections should be held along with Lok Sabha polls in the state but all their hopes to regain power have been dashed.
For time being ECI has announced that only parliamentary polls would be held in the state and decision about assembly elections would be taken after new dispensation takes over the reins of the country in May. "Kashmir centric leaders are claiming that ECI's decision has disappointed the people but the fact is that no assembly polls for time being have put the mainstream parties in Kashmir in a tight spot and it's a bad news for them," said an analyst.
He said, "Kashmir centric leaders seem to have realized that delay in assembly polls means that their very existence is under threat as New Delhi's Kashmir policy has changed and it's clear that no one will be allowed to preach separatism. Whosoever, wants to remain in mainstream will have to fall in line."
The analyst said that leaders like National Conference President Dr Farooq Abdullah are describing the airstrikes at Balakot in Pakistan as an election stunt but the fact is that these strikes have proved it to the terrorists that Indian Air Force can hit them hard even within their dens. "ECI not holding the assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir is a clear cut signal to the Kashmir centric parties to choose on whose side they are," the analyst added.
A Kashmir watcher said that the "changed approach" of New Delhi towards the Kashmiri politicians is worrying them. "These politicians have started believing that they are no more relevant and with each passing day their credibility is getting eroded," he added.
He said that former chief minister of J&K and NC vice-president Omar Abdullah left no stone unturned to pressurize the BJP led NDA government to hold Lok Sabha and Assembly polls simultaneously in Jammu and Kashmir but the pressure exerted by him did not work. "Kashmir centric parties have been shown their worth. Kashmiri politicians used to speak in one language in New Delhi and another in Kashmir. The message is clear that if they want to rule Jammu and Kashmir then they would have to only speak in a nationalistic language. No other language is acceptable. They cannot keep on appeasing Pakistan and their stooges and enjoy the privileges, which are provided by India. They should stop worrying about the people and first put their act right. They are living in new India, where there is no place for the anti-national elements," said a political analyst.
