Instead of going to quarantine, SMC Mayor continues to move around
4/7/2020 12:26:44 AM

Early Times Report

Jammu, Apr 6: A few hours after the family member of his office employee tested positive for coronavirus, instead of taking moral responsibility to go for quarantine, the Srinagar Municipal Corporation, Mayor, Junaid Mattoo has been moving around.
It is pertinent to mention that recently, one of the family members of his employee at his office at Karan Nagar had tested positive for coronavirus creating panic among the employees of the SMC.
The Jammu and Kashmir Police had instantly quarantined the policemen in the escort of Mattoo. But the next morning the Mayor was not only at his office but had also tweeted against the government, which provides him security.
Officials in police department said they were expecting Mattoo to have opted for quarantine. “But we are shocked to see why he’s moving around since then,” said a senior official on the condition of anonymity.
A senior official in the health department said Mattoo should have gone for quarantine when some family member of his employee has tested positive as “adherence to safety protocol.” “Under such conditions one has to go for quarantine lest the problem grows,” the official said.
Interestingly, since then Mattoo has also been visiting various Govt offices and also hospitals.
A senior official in the administration said it was misuse of power that the Mayor was moving around in violation of norms. “He may not only be risking his own life but even of those working with him. When the police took instant measures to quarantine their personnel why has SMC been so irresponsible?” said a health official.
Sources said there was a need that many of the SMC employees should have been put in quarantine after the family member of one of them was found positive. “But nobody is taking things seriously. This is really unfortunate,” the officials said.
Repeated attempts to contact Mattoo didn’t bear fruits.
