ANANTNAG, Apr 19: A group of people from Tulhard locality of Aishmuqam in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Sunday allegedly heckled some sanitation workers and councilors of Municipal Committee Aishmuqam, who had arrived in the area to carryout fumigation drive.
Few videos of the incident have appeared on social media sites showing residents hackling and thrashing councilors and sanitation workers. Sanitation workers and councilors of Municipal Committee Aishmuqam had gone to Tulhard locality of Aishmuqam along with a fumigation vehicle belonging to Municipal Council Anantnag to carryout fumigation drive.
Soon after the incident, the workers and councilors of Municipal Committee Aishmuqam have approached police with a written complaint against the residents. “We have received the complaint. We are looking into and action as warrant under will be taken,” a police officer told Early Times over phone.
Executive Officer Municipal Committee Aishmuqam, Abdul Rashid Vaid and councilors, who were hackled including former President of the municipality Abdul Wahid Bhat wasn’t available for a comment as all of them didn’t attend repeated calls from this reporter. However, residents of Tulhard Aishmuqam claimed that they have boycotted Municipal Committee Aishmuqam as they don’t want to be part of it.
“Since year 2006 we haven’t allowed them (Municipal workers) to enter into the area as we are demanding exclusion from the committee and will continue to do so,” they said. Residents said that earlier this week they have returned back municipal teams and haven’t allowed them to carry out any activity. “We will take care of ourselves. Municipal Committee doesn’t need think about us,” they added. As per the reports, the residents are demanding exclusion of their area-[ward-13 from] Municipal Committee Aishmuqam since 2006. “Their file is pending for disposal since 2006-07 and residents have been running from pillar to post for the same,” an officer, who is privy to the development, said.
He said that the erstwhile District development board had also agreed in principle to de-notify Tulhard from Municipal Committee but the orders were not issued yet. “The ward in question is out of bounds for MC Aishmuqam as they have never been allowed to perform their job related to sanitation, licensing, building permissions and Khilafwarzi and no revenue has been received from this ward since 2006-07, that makes it completely defunct ward out of total 13 municipal wards of MC Aishmuqam,” he said.
Officers said that inhabitants have also not received any benefit of government sponsored schemes till date neither the Municipality has carried out any developmental activity in the area.
