EARLY TIMES REPORT

JAMMU, Apr 30: Rarely visible, the newspaper hawkers come and go in a jiffy after delivering a newspaper. Do their job in a subdued manner day after day while seldom do they miss the daily routine of distributing multiple newspapers at the doorsteps of avid readers. Yet, they perform their work with immaculate finesse.
Reaching out to hundreds of houses in a duration ranging from 4 to 6 hours on a daily basis in the morning is not a mean task but the newspaper hawkers have proved time and again that they are the real hard task masters. And, in the present scenario where lockdown restrictions amid outbreak of coronavirus have made a large number of people including professionals confined to their houses, the heroes delivering newspapers are going on strongly.
In the wake of COVID-19 outbreak and the subsequent imposition of nationwide lockdown initially it looked like that the hawkers may suspend their services but eventually they decided to carry on their job of newspaper distribution in Jammu city and other parts of the country. Like some other professionals, the newspaper hawkers are also facing certain difficulties in the ongoing lockdown period; however, they don’t let their spirit down and doing their job as usual.
However, it seems the efforts of these ‘unsung’ heroes are not getting the attention they deserve. At this time of crisis when doctors, police and sanitation staff are performing a herculean task, the services rendered by newspaper delivery boys cannot be disregarded.
“Their exemplary service during these testing times has yet to get the much needed recognition from the people whom they are serving with equal devotion and dedication like other professionals including sanitation workers, police or for that matter, healthcare workers,” said a newspaper subscriber.
“Newspaper hawkers are also at the forefront of this war against coronavirus pandemic. They are also playing the role of frontline corona warriors though invisibly. Their lives are equally at stake due to the threat perception. They also need to be praised wholeheartedly,” he added.
It is in place to mention here that in present times a large number of sources are providing news to the people but it has been observed that at times the general public is being fed with fake stuff and this is the reason that a large number of people still prefer newspapers for credibility.
Therefore, the significance of newspapers increases much more during a catastrophe like coronavirus and it is the newspaper hawkers, who are acting as a vital component in disseminating the most reliable source of information to the people confined to their houses during the ongoing lockdown phase.
